نِعْمَ عَوْنُ الشَّيْطانِ اِتِّباعُ الهَوى۔
Following vain desire is indeed a good aide to Satan.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Vain Desire)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
نِعْمَ عَوْنُ الشَّيْطانِ اِتِّباعُ الهَوى۔
This can be translated as,
Following vain desire is indeed a good aide to Satan.
Let us delve into the meaning of the key words in this Hadith. (ni'ma) "نِعْمَ" means "indeed a good" or "what an excellent." (awn) "عَوْنُ" refers to "aide" or "support." (ash-shaytan) "الشَّيْطانِ" signifies "Satan." (ittiba) "اِتِّباعُ" means "following" or "obeying." Lastly, (al-hawa) "الهَوى" translates to "vain desire" or "caprice."
To understand the beautiful message of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) warns us in Surah Al-Qasas, verse 50:
But if they do not respond to you - then know that they only follow their own desires. And who is more astray than one who follows his desire without guidance from Allah?
This verse emphasizes the danger of blindly following one's desires without seeking guidance from Allah. It is a path that leads to misguidance and deviation.
In another verse, Surah Al-Jathiyah, verse 23, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states:
Have you seen he who has taken as his god his [own] desire, and Allah has sent him astray due to knowledge and has set a seal upon his hearing and his heart and put over his vision a veil? So who will guide him after Allah? Then will you not be reminded?
This verse highlights the consequences of following one's desires as a form of idolatry. It leads to a state of being misguided, with one's senses and understanding being veiled from the truth.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), being the gate of knowledge, warns us about the dangers of following vain desires. Vain desires are those whims and inclinations that are not aligned with the teachings of Islam and the guidance of Allah. They can manifest in various forms, such as pursuing materialistic desires, indulging in forbidden relationships, or engaging in sinful actions.
When we succumb to our vain desires, we become vulnerable to the influence of Satan. Satan, as our eternal enemy, seeks to lead us astray from the path of righteousness. By following our whims and desires, we unknowingly become allies of Satan, aiding him in his mission to divert us from the straight path.
The consequences of following vain desires are grave. It distances us from the mercy and guidance of Allah and weakens our connection with Him. It clouds our judgment, making us susceptible to making poor decisions that harm ourselves and others. It also erodes our spiritual growth and prevents us from attaining true happiness and contentment.
To overcome the allure of vain desires, we must strive to align our actions and intentions with the teachings of the Quran and the guidance of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) and his Ahl al-Bayt (عَلَيْهِمُ ٱلسَّلَامُ). We should seek knowledge and understanding of Islam to discern between what is permissible and what is forbidden. By purifying our hearts and seeking Allah's guidance, we can resist the temptations of Satan and safeguard ourselves from the perils of following vain desires.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a powerful reminder for Muslims to be cautious of following their vain desires. It highlights the importance of seeking guidance from Allah and His teachings, as outlined in the Quran. By doing so, we can protect ourselves from the influence of Satan and strive towards a life of righteousness and spiritual fulfillment. May Allah grant us the strength and wisdom to overcome our vain desires and remain steadfast on the path of truth.
