(Ghurar al-Hikam: Prayer And One Who Stands For Prayer)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
Prayer causes [divine] mercy to descend.
This beautiful Hadith emphasizes the significance of prayer in the life of a Muslim. Let us delve deeper into the words of this Hadith and explore its meaning in light of the Quran.
The word (Salah) "صَلاة" in Arabic refers to the ritual prayer that Muslims perform five times a day. It is a form of worship that involves specific physical movements, recitation of verses from the Quran, and supplication to Allah. Salah is not merely a set of actions, but a means of establishing a deep connection with our Creator.
The word (tastanzilu) "تَسْتَنْزِلُ" means "to descend" or "to come down." In the context of this Hadith, it refers to the descent of divine mercy upon the one who engages in prayer. This mercy encompasses forgiveness, blessings, guidance, and protection from evil.
The Quran provides numerous verses that highlight the importance and benefits of prayer. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:3),
Who believe in the unseen, establish prayer, and spend out of what We have provided for them.
This verse emphasizes the correlation between faith, prayer, and the act of giving in charity. It indicates that prayer is an essential component of a believer's life.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Mu'minun (23:1-2), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states,
Certainly will the believers have succeeded: They who are during their prayer humbly submissive.
This verse highlights the importance of humility and submission during the act of prayer. It reminds us that true success lies in the sincerity and devotion we exhibit in our Salah.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes that through prayer, divine mercy descends upon the worshipper. When we engage in Salah with a pure heart, seeking closeness to Allah, we open ourselves to receive His abundant mercy and blessings. Prayer is not merely a ritualistic act, but a means of attaining spiritual purification and seeking Allah's forgiveness.
When we perform Salah regularly and sincerely, it has a transformative effect on our lives. It instills discipline, mindfulness, and a sense of connection with our Creator. Prayer serves as a constant reminder of our purpose in this world and helps us navigate the challenges we face. It strengthens our relationship with Allah and enables us to seek His guidance and support in all aspects of our lives.
Moreover, the mercy that descends upon us through prayer has far-reaching consequences. It purifies our souls, forgives our sins, and elevates our spiritual status. It brings us closer to Allah and helps us develop a deep sense of gratitude and contentment. This divine mercy also extends to our relationships with others, as it inspires us to be compassionate, forgiving, and just in our interactions.
Reflecting on the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), we are reminded of the immense blessings and benefits that come with engaging in prayer. It is a means of seeking Allah's mercy, guidance, and protection. It is a source of solace and strength in times of difficulty. It is a pathway to spiritual growth and a means of attaining closeness to our Creator.
As Muslims, let us strive to establish a strong and consistent prayer practice, recognizing its significance and the mercy it brings. Let us approach Salah with sincerity, humility, and a deep understanding of its purpose. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) bless us all with the ability to perform our prayers with devotion and reap the abundant mercy that descends upon us through this beautiful act of worship.
