زَكاةُ العِلْمِ نَشْرُهُ۔
The alms-tax of knowledge is its dissemination.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Knowledge)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, the Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "زَكاةُ العِلْمِ نَشْرُهُ۔" This can be translated as,
The alms-tax of knowledge is its dissemination.
Let us delve into the significance of this Hadith in light of the Quran.
The word (zakat) "زَكَاةُ" in this Hadith refers to the concept of purification and growth. It is a term commonly associated with the obligatory charity given by Muslims. In the context of knowledge, (zakat al-'ilm) "زَكَاةُ العِلْمِ" refers to the purification and growth of knowledge through its dissemination. This implies that knowledge should not be hoarded or kept to oneself, but rather it should be shared and spread among others.
The word (nashruhu) "نَشْرُهُ" means dissemination or spreading. It emphasizes the importance of sharing knowledge with others. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) is teaching us that knowledge is not meant to be confined to a select few, but rather it should be shared with the wider community for the benefit of all.
This Hadith is beautifully aligned with the teachings of the Quran. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) repeatedly emphasizes the importance of seeking knowledge and spreading it for the betterment of society. In Surah Al-Zumar (39:9), Allah says,
Say, 'Are those who know equal to those who do not know?' Only they will remember [who are] people of understanding.
This verse highlights the superiority of those who possess knowledge and encourages the dissemination of knowledge to enlighten others.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:269), Allah says,
He grants wisdom to whom He pleases, and whoever is granted wisdom is indeed given a great wealth.
This verse highlights the value and significance of knowledge, and how it is a blessing from Allah. By sharing knowledge, we are not only fulfilling our duty to Allah, but we are also enriching the lives of others.
The consequences of adhering to the teachings of this Hadith are profound. When knowledge is shared and disseminated, it has the power to transform individuals and societies. It leads to intellectual growth, innovation, and progress. By sharing knowledge, we contribute to the development of our communities and the betterment of humanity as a whole.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his immense knowledge and wisdom, exemplified the importance of disseminating knowledge throughout his life. He actively engaged in teaching and mentoring others, ensuring that knowledge was not confined to a select few. His teachings and insights have had a lasting impact on Islamic scholarship and continue to inspire Muslims to seek knowledge and share it with others.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us that knowledge is not meant to be hoarded, but rather it should be shared and disseminated for the benefit of all. By spreading knowledge, we fulfill our duty to Allah and contribute to the intellectual and societal growth of our communities. Let us strive to embody the teachings of this Hadith and become agents of knowledge dissemination, following in the footsteps of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) and the noble teachings of Islam. May Allah (تَبَارَكَ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom and understanding to fulfill this important responsibility.
