إذا أعْطَيْتَ فَأوْجِزْ۔
When you [wish to] give, be quick.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Good Turns And Benevolent Actions)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "إذا أعْطَيْتَ فَأوْجِزْ۔" This can be translated into English as,
When you [wish to] give, be quick.
Let us delve into the meaning of this Hadith and explore its implications in light of the Quran. The word (aatayta) "أعْطَيْتَ" is derived from the root word (ata) "عَطَى", which means to give or bestow. It signifies the act of giving something to someone. The word (awjiz) "أوْجِزْ" is derived from the root word (wajaza) "وَجَزَ", which means to hasten or be quick. It emphasizes the importance of being prompt and swift in giving.
The Quran encourages believers to be generous and charitable, emphasizing the virtues of giving to those in need. In Surah Al-Baqarah, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says, (Quran 2:261)
The example of those who spend their wealth in the way of Allah is like a seed [of grain] which grows seven spikes; in each spike is a hundred grains. And Allah multiplies [His reward] for whom He wills. And Allah is all-Encompassing and Knowing
This verse highlights the immense reward and blessings that come with giving for the sake of Allah.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Hadid, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states, (Quran 57:11)
Who is it that would loan Allah a goodly loan so He may multiply it for him many times over? And it is Allah who withholds and grants abundance, and to Him you will be returned
This verse emphasizes the concept of giving as a loan to Allah, knowing that He will multiply it manifold in this world and the hereafter.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith urges Muslims to be swift in their acts of giving. It encourages us to seize the opportunity to give whenever it presents itself, without delay or hesitation. This promptness in giving reflects a sincere and selfless heart, eager to help others and fulfill their needs.
When we are quick to give, we demonstrate our commitment to the teachings of Islam and our desire to follow in the footsteps of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) and his noble companions. Their exemplary generosity and willingness to help those in need serve as inspirations for us all.
Being quick in giving has numerous benefits. Firstly, it allows us to seize the opportunity to make a positive impact on someone's life. By promptly extending a helping hand, we can alleviate their suffering and bring them relief. Secondly, being swift in giving prevents us from procrastinating or making excuses. It helps us overcome any hesitation or doubts that may arise and allows us to fulfill our duty towards our fellow human beings.
Moreover, being quick in giving also has a profound effect on our own spiritual growth. It purifies our hearts from greed and selfishness, cultivating within us a sense of empathy and compassion. It strengthens our connection with Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and increases our trust in His provision, knowing that He is the ultimate provider and sustainer.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us of the importance of being quick in our acts of giving. It urges us to seize the opportunity to help others and fulfill their needs without delay. By being prompt in our generosity, we not only benefit those in need but also enhance our own spiritual growth. Let us strive to embody this noble teaching and follow the example set by the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) and his noble companions. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) bless us with the ability to be swift in giving and make us a source of relief for those in need.
