In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "الأماني تُخدعُ" which translates to "Aspirations delude." This concise statement holds profound wisdom and serves as a reminder for all Muslims to be cautious of the deceptive nature of worldly desires and ambitions.
To fully comprehend the depth of this Hadith, let us delve into the meanings of its key words. The word (amani) "أماني" refers to aspirations, hopes, or desires that individuals hold in their hearts. These aspirations can range from materialistic desires to personal ambitions and goals. The word (tukhda) "تُخْدَعُ" means to be deceived or misled. Therefore, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) is cautioning us that our aspirations have the potential to deceive and mislead us.
This amazing Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) finds support in the teachings of the Quran. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) warns us in Surah Al-Hadid (57:20),
Know that the life of this world is but amusement and diversion and adornment and boasting to one another and competition in increase of wealth and children - like the example of a rain whose [resulting] plant growth pleases the tillers; then it dries and you see it turned yellow; then it becomes [scattered] debris. And in the Hereafter is severe punishment and forgiveness from Allah and approval. And what is the worldly life except the enjoyment of delusion.
This ayah emphasizes the transient nature of worldly pursuits and the illusionary nature of materialistic desires. It reminds us that the allure of worldly aspirations can lead us astray from the path of righteousness and distract us from our ultimate purpose in life - to seek the pleasure of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).
Furthermore, in Surah An-Nisa (4:77), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) advises us,
Have you not seen those who were told, 'Restrain your hands [from fighting] and establish prayer and give zakah'? But then when fighting was ordained for them, at once a party of them feared men as they fear Allah or with [even] greater fear. They said, 'Our Lord, why have You decreed upon us fighting? If only You had postponed [it for] us for a short time.' Say, The enjoyment of this world is little, and the Hereafter is better for he who fears Allah. And injustice will not be done to you, [even] as much as a thread [inside a date seed].'
This ayah highlights the tendency of individuals to prioritize worldly desires over their obligations towards Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). It warns us against becoming so engrossed in our worldly aspirations that we neglect our spiritual duties and the pursuit of the Hereafter.
