عَلَيْكَ بِحِفْظِ كُلِّ أمْر لاتُعْذَرُ بِإضاعَتِهِ۔
It is upon you to preserve every matter that you cannot be excused for neglecting.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Obligatory And Recommended Acts)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance of preserving and safeguarding every matter that holds significance. The word (hifz) "حِفْظِ" in Arabic means to protect, guard, or preserve. It encompasses the idea of taking care of something and ensuring its well-being. The word (amr) "أمْر" refers to any matter, affair, or responsibility that one is entrusted with. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) advises Muslims to be diligent in fulfilling their duties and not to neglect any responsibility that has been assigned to them.
This profound statement by Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) is in line with the teachings of the Quran. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) repeatedly emphasizes the importance of fulfilling our obligations and responsibilities. In Surah Al-Baqarah, Allah says, (Quran 17:34)
And fulfill [every] commitment. Indeed, the commitment is ever [that about which one will be] questioned
This verse highlights the significance of fulfilling our commitments and being accountable for them.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Ma'idah, Allah states, (Quran 5:1)
O you who have believed, fulfill [all] contracts
This verse emphasizes the importance of honoring contracts and agreements, which is a form of preserving and safeguarding matters. It is a reminder that neglecting our responsibilities can have serious consequences.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) advice holds great wisdom and practical implications. When we neglect our duties, whether they are personal, social, or religious, it can lead to negative consequences. Neglecting our prayers, for example, can weaken our connection with Allah and hinder our spiritual growth. Neglecting our family responsibilities can strain relationships and lead to discord within the household. Neglecting our duties as citizens can result in the deterioration of society.
On the other hand, preserving and fulfilling our responsibilities brings about positive outcomes. It strengthens our character, builds trust, and fosters a sense of accountability. When we fulfill our obligations, we contribute to the betterment of our communities and establish a strong foundation for personal and collective growth.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement also highlights the importance of time management and prioritization. We are often faced with numerous tasks and responsibilities, and it is crucial to prioritize and allocate our time wisely. By preserving and fulfilling our obligations, we demonstrate discipline, commitment, and a sense of purpose.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a reminder for Muslims to be diligent in preserving and fulfilling their responsibilities. It aligns with the teachings of the Quran, which emphasize the importance of fulfilling commitments and honoring contracts. Neglecting our duties can have negative consequences, while preserving and fulfilling them brings about positive outcomes. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the strength and wisdom to fulfill our responsibilities and preserve every matter entrusted to us.
