— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Alertness And Vigilance)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his purified progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "اليقظة استبصار", which translates to "Alertness is perspicacity" in English. Let us delve into the meanings of these words to gain a deeper understanding of this thought-provoking Hadith.

The word (al-yaqdhah) "اليقظة" refers to being awake, vigilant, and aware. It signifies a state of being fully conscious and attentive, not only physically but also mentally and spiritually. It implies being alert and watchful, ready to perceive and comprehend the reality of things.

On the other hand, (istibsar) "استبصار" denotes insight, discernment, and the ability to perceive things clearly and accurately. It implies a deep understanding that goes beyond the surface level, allowing one to grasp the hidden meanings and implications of various matters.

To shed light on the significance of this Hadith, let us turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Anfal (8:29),

O you who have believed, if you fear Allah, He will grant you a criterion and will remove from you your misdeeds and forgive you. And Allah is the possessor of great bounty.

This verse emphasizes the importance of being conscious and aware of Allah's presence in our lives. When we are vigilant and alert, fearing Allah and seeking His pleasure, He bestows upon us a criterion, a discerning ability that allows us to distinguish between right and wrong, truth and falsehood. This criterion enables us to make wise decisions and avoid falling into sin.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Hujurat (49:6), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,

O you who have believed, if there comes to you a disobedient one with information, investigate, lest you harm a people out of ignorance and become, over what you have done, regretful.

This verse highlights the importance of being vigilant and discerning when receiving information or news. It urges us to verify the authenticity and accuracy of what we hear before accepting it as truth. By doing so, we avoid spreading false information and causing harm to others due to our ignorance.

Now, let us reflect on the thought-provoking saying of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), "Alertness is perspicacity." This statement emphasizes the inseparable connection between being alert and having insight. When we are fully awake and attentive, both physically and spiritually, we are more likely to perceive things accurately and understand their true nature.

Alertness allows us to observe the signs of Allah's creation, to ponder over the verses of the Quran, and to reflect upon the world around us. It enables us to recognize the subtle nuances and deeper meanings hidden within the words of Allah and the actions of people. Through alertness, we gain a deeper understanding of the world and our place in it.

Moreover, alertness helps us in our interactions with others. By being vigilant and discerning, we can avoid misunderstandings, misjudgments, and conflicts. It allows us to empathize with others, to understand their perspectives, and to respond with wisdom and compassion.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us the importance of being alert and vigilant in all aspects of our lives. It reminds us to seek insight and discernment, to strive for a deeper understanding of the world and our relationship with Allah. By being alert, we can navigate through life with wisdom, avoiding pitfalls and making informed decisions. May Allah grant us the ability to be truly awake and perceptive, and may He bless us with the insight to navigate the complexities of this world.
