لاجَهْلَ أعْظَمُ مِنْ تَعَدِّي القَدْرِ۔
There is no ignorance greater than transgressing [beyond] one’s status.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Status And Worth)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
لاجَهْلَ أعْظَمُ مِنْ تَعَدِّي القَدْرِ۔
This wise utterance emphasizes the grave consequences of transgressing one's limits and overstepping the boundaries set by Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). Let us delve into the exegesis of this Hadith by exploring the meanings of its key words.
The word (jahla) "جَهْلَ" refers to ignorance or lack of knowledge. It signifies a state of unawareness or being uninformed about a particular matter. In this context, it refers to the ignorance of one's own limitations and the consequences that arise from exceeding them. The word (ta'addi) "تَعَدِّي" means to transgress or go beyond the prescribed limits. It implies crossing the boundaries set by Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) in terms of knowledge, authority, or actions. Finally, the word (al-qadr) "القَدْرِ" refers to one's status, position, or capacity.
To understand the significance of this Hadith, we turn to the Quran, where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) repeatedly emphasizes the importance of knowledge, humility, and staying within one's limits. In Surah Al-Hujurat (49:13), Allah says,
O mankind, indeed We have created you from male and female and made you peoples and tribes that you may know one another. Indeed, the most noble of you in the sight of Allah is the most righteous of you. Indeed, Allah is Knowing and Acquainted.
This verse highlights the importance of knowledge and understanding among people, as it leads to righteousness and nobility in the sight of Allah.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Isra (17:36), Allah says,
And do not pursue that of which you have no knowledge. Indeed, the hearing, the sight and the heart - about all those [one] will be questioned.
This verse cautions against blindly following or speaking about matters without proper knowledge. It reminds us that we will be held accountable for our actions, including the words we utter, and that it is essential to seek knowledge and refrain from speaking or acting out of ignorance.
Now, let us reflect on the beautiful message of Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith. The Imam is highlighting the gravity of transgressing one's limits and exceeding the boundaries set by Allah. This transgression can manifest in various ways, such as arrogating authority that one does not possess, making judgments without proper knowledge, or claiming knowledge beyond one's capacity. Such actions stem from ignorance and can lead to detrimental consequences.
For instance, when individuals overstep their limits and claim authority that they do not possess, it can result in chaos, injustice, and oppression. Similarly, when people speak or act without knowledge, they risk spreading misinformation, causing harm, and damaging relationships. Moreover, when individuals claim knowledge beyond their capacity, they not only deceive themselves but also misguide others, leading them astray from the path of truth.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith serves as a profound reminder for Muslims to be humble, seek knowledge, and acknowledge their limitations. It encourages us to recognize the importance of staying within the boundaries prescribed by Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and to avoid the pitfalls of ignorance and arrogance. By doing so, we can foster harmony, justice, and wisdom within ourselves and our communities.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us of the dire consequences of transgressing our limits and exceeding the boundaries set by Allah. It emphasizes the importance of knowledge, humility, and staying within our capacities. By seeking knowledge, acknowledging our limitations, and refraining from speaking or acting out of ignorance, we can strive to be righteous individuals who contribute positively to society and earn the pleasure of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). May Allah guide us all on the path of knowledge and wisdom.
