إنَّ تَخْليصَ النِّيَّةِ مِنَ الفَسادِ أشَدُّ مِنَ العامِلينَ مِنْ طُولِ الاِجْتِهادِ۔
Verily making intentions sincere and free from corruption is more difficult for the doers [of good deeds] than a prolonged, difficult struggle.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Intention)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance of having sincere and pure intentions in our actions. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his deep knowledge and wisdom, highlights that making intentions sincere and free from corruption is even more challenging than the actual physical effort put into performing good deeds.
Let us delve into the key words of this Hadith to gain a deeper understanding. The word (takhlees) "تَخْلِيصَ" means to purify or make something sincere. It refers to the act of removing any hidden motives or impurities from one's intentions. (niyyah) "النِّيَّةِ" means intention, the inner motivation behind our actions. (fasad) "الفَسَادِ" refers to corruption or impurity, indicating any hidden agendas or insincere motives.
To further comprehend the significance of sincere intentions, we turn to the Quran. In Surah Al-Baqarah, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says, (Quran 98:5)
And they were not commanded except to worship Allah, [being] sincere to Him in religion, inclining to truth, and to establish prayer and to give zakah. And that is the correct religion.
This verse emphasizes the importance of sincerity in worship, highlighting that true religion is based on pure intentions directed solely towards Allah.
Another verse that supports the concept of sincere intentions is found in Surah Al-Mumtahanah. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states, (Quran 60:8)
Allah does not forbid you from those who do not fight you because of religion and do not expel you from your homes - from being righteous toward them and acting justly toward them. Indeed, Allah loves those who act justly.
This verse emphasizes the importance of sincerity in our interactions with others, highlighting that Allah loves those who act with pure intentions and fairness.
Now, let us reflect on the wise message of Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith. The Imam reminds us that while performing good deeds may require effort and struggle, the real challenge lies in ensuring that our intentions remain pure and free from corruption. It is easy for hidden motives, such as seeking praise or recognition, to taint our actions and diminish their value in the sight of Allah.
For example, imagine a person who donates a large sum of money to a charitable cause. On the surface, this act may appear commendable. However, if the person's intention is to gain social status or to be seen as generous by others, their action loses its sincerity. On the other hand, a person who donates a small amount of money with the pure intention of seeking the pleasure of Allah, even though their contribution may be modest, their act holds greater value in the sight of Allah.
The consequences of having sincere intentions are far-reaching. When our intentions are pure, our actions become a means of drawing closer to Allah and seeking His pleasure. It allows us to align our actions with the teachings of Islam and to fulfill our obligations with sincerity and devotion. Moreover, sincere intentions also impact our relationships with others, as they foster fairness, justice, and compassion in our interactions.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a profound reminder for Muslims to constantly purify their intentions and strive for sincerity in their actions. It teaches us that true success lies not only in the physical effort we put into our deeds but also in the purity of our intentions. By aligning our intentions solely towards seeking the pleasure of Allah, we can ensure that our actions hold true value and are rewarded by Him. May Allah grant us the ability to make our intentions sincere and free from corruption in all aspects of our lives.
