اَلصِّدْقُ أنْجَحُ دليل۔
Truthfulness is the most successful evidence.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Truthfulness)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, the Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
Truthfulness is the most successful evidence.
This wise utterance highlights the significance and power of truthfulness in our lives as Muslims. Let us delve into the exegesis of this Hadith and explore its implications in light of the Quran.
The word (truthfulness) "صِّدْقُ" in this Hadith refers to the act of speaking and embodying the truth. It is the quality of being honest, sincere, and genuine in our words and actions. Truthfulness is not only about speaking the truth but also about living a life that aligns with the truth.
The word (most successful) "أنْجَحُ" signifies the effectiveness and superiority of truthfulness as a means of achieving success in this world and the hereafter. It implies that truthfulness is not only a moral virtue but also a practical tool that leads to favorable outcomes and blessings from Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).
To understand the significance of truthfulness, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Ahzab (33:70-71):
O you who have believed, fear Allah and speak words of appropriate justice. He will [then] amend for you your deeds and forgive you your sins. And whoever obeys Allah and His Messenger has certainly attained a great attainment.
These verses emphasize the importance of speaking words of justice and truth. When we are truthful in our speech, it leads to the rectification of our actions and the forgiveness of our sins. It is through truthfulness that we attain the ultimate success and satisfaction in the sight of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).
Moreover, the Quran also highlights the consequences of falsehood and the rewards of truthfulness. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Isra (17:81):
And say, 'Truth has come, and falsehood has departed. Indeed is falsehood, [by nature], ever bound to depart.'
This verse emphasizes that truth always prevails over falsehood. When we embody truthfulness in our lives, we distance ourselves from falsehood and deceit. By doing so, we align ourselves with the divine truth and attain success in this world and the hereafter.
In light of this exegesis, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us of the importance of truthfulness in our daily lives. It serves as a guiding principle for our interactions with others and our relationship with Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). When we prioritize truthfulness, we establish trust, strengthen our character, and earn the pleasure of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).
Furthermore, truthfulness has far-reaching consequences beyond our personal lives. It has the power to transform societies, promote justice, and foster harmony among individuals. When we speak the truth, we become beacons of guidance and sources of inspiration for others.
Let us reflect on the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) and strive to embody truthfulness in all aspects of our lives. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the strength and sincerity to be truthful, and may He bless us with success in this world and the hereafter.
