He who overcomes his vain desire is victorious in attaining the Paradise of the [everlasting] Abode.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Vain Desire)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states:
ظَفِرَ بِجَنَّةِ المَأْوى مَنْ غَلَبَ الهَوى۔
This can be translated as:
He who overcomes his vain desire is victorious in attaining the Paradise of the [everlasting] Abode.
Let us delve into the meaning of some important words in this Hadith. The word (zafira) "ظَفِرَ" means to triumph or be victorious. (jannati) "بِجَنَّةِ" refers to the Paradise, the eternal abode of bliss promised by Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) to the righteous believers. (al-ma'wa) "المَأْوَى" refers to the place of refuge or dwelling. (man) "مَنْ" means whoever. (ghalaba) "غَلَبَ" means to overcome or conquer. And finally, (al-hawa) "الهَوَى" refers to vain desires or base instincts.
To understand the impactful message of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Qasas, verse 50:
But if they do not respond to you - then know that they only follow their [own] desires. And who is more astray than one who follows his desire without guidance from Allah? Indeed, Allah does not guide the wrongdoing people.
This verse highlights the importance of overcoming our vain desires and aligning ourselves with the guidance of Allah. Those who allow their desires to control them are misguided and prone to wrongdoing. On the other hand, those who conquer their base instincts and submit to the will of Allah are the ones who attain victory and success.
Another verse that resonates with the message of this Hadith is found in Surah Al-Qasas, verse 79:
So he came out from it, fearful and anticipating [apprehension]. He said, 'My Lord, save me from the wrongdoing people.'
This verse refers to Prophet Moses (Musa) when he fled from Pharaoh's tyranny. Despite his fear and apprehension, he sought refuge in Allah and implored for protection from the wrongdoing people. This exemplifies the concept of seeking refuge in Allah and overcoming our own desires and fears in order to attain salvation.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance of self-control and the triumph over our vain desires. It teaches us that true victory lies in conquering our base instincts and aligning ourselves with the guidance of Allah. By doing so, we attain success not only in this world but also in the eternal abode of Paradise.
When we reflect upon this Hadith, we realize that our vain desires often lead us astray and prevent us from attaining true success. These desires can manifest in various forms, such as greed, lust, envy, and arrogance. They distract us from the path of righteousness and hinder our spiritual growth.
However, when we overcome these desires and submit ourselves to the will of Allah, we attain a higher level of self-discipline and spiritual elevation. We become more focused on fulfilling our duties towards Allah and our fellow human beings. Our actions are driven by sincerity and righteousness, rather than by selfish desires.
The consequences of conquering our vain desires are profound. It leads to a life of contentment, inner peace, and spiritual fulfillment. It enables us to make choices that are pleasing to Allah and beneficial for ourselves and society. By overcoming our base instincts, we become better individuals, striving for excellence in all aspects of our lives.
Moreover, this Hadith serves as a reminder that the path to Paradise requires effort and struggle. It is not easy to overcome our desires and temptations, but the rewards are immense. The Paradise of the [everlasting] Abode is the ultimate goal for every Muslim, and it can only be attained by those who are steadfast in their commitment to Allah and His teachings.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us the importance of conquering our vain desires in order to attain victory and success in this world and the hereafter. It reminds us to seek refuge in Allah and to align ourselves with His guidance. By doing so, we can overcome our base instincts and strive towards a life of righteousness, contentment, and eternal bliss. May Allah grant us the strength to overcome our desires and guide us on the path to Paradise.
