(Ghurar al-Hikam: Deviation From The Right Path)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
أسْوَءُ شَيْء عاقِبَةً الغَيُّ۔
This can be translated as,
The thing with the worst outcome is deviation [from the right path].
Let us delve into the deeper meaning of this enlightening Hadith and explore its significance in light of the Quran.
The word (ghayy) "غَيُّ" in this Hadith refers to deviation or straying away from the right path. It signifies a departure from the path of righteousness, guidance, and truth. This deviation can manifest in various forms, such as deviating from the teachings of Islam, following false ideologies, or indulging in sinful actions. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the dire consequences that arise from such deviation, emphasizing that it leads to the worst possible outcome.
The Quran provides us with numerous verses that support the message conveyed in this Hadith. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) warns us about the consequences of straying from the straight path in Surah Al-Ma'idah, verse 77:
Say, 'O People of the Scripture, do not exceed limits in your religion beyond the truth and do not follow the inclinations of a people who had gone astray before and misled many and have strayed from the soundness of the way.'
This verse reminds us not to go beyond the boundaries set by Allah and not to follow the misguided ways of those who have deviated from the truth. It serves as a reminder that deviation from the right path leads to misguidance and ultimately to a detrimental outcome.
Another verse that supports the message of this Hadith is found in Surah Al-An'am, verse 116:
And if you obey most of those upon the earth, they will mislead you from the way of Allah. They follow not except assumption, and they are not but falsifying.
This verse cautions us against blindly following the majority without discernment. It warns that if we were to follow the majority who deviate from the path of Allah, we would be led astray. It emphasizes the importance of staying steadfast on the right path, even if it means going against the prevailing norms and opinions of society.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement serves as a profound reminder for Muslims to be vigilant and cautious in their actions and beliefs. Deviation from the right path not only leads to negative consequences in this world but also has severe implications in the hereafter. It is a warning against falling into the traps of falsehood, innovation, and sinful behavior.
Deviation can have far-reaching consequences, both individually and collectively. Individually, it can lead to a loss of spiritual connection with Allah, a decline in moral values, and a sense of emptiness and dissatisfaction. Collectively, it can result in the fragmentation of the Muslim community, the erosion of Islamic principles, and the weakening of the Ummah as a whole.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his profound knowledge and wisdom, highlights the importance of adhering to the right path and avoiding deviation. His words serve as a reminder for Muslims to constantly evaluate their actions, beliefs, and intentions, ensuring that they align with the teachings of Islam as derived from the Quran and the Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ).
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us of the severe consequences of deviation from the right path. It urges us to stay steadfast on the path of righteousness, guided by the teachings of Islam. By adhering to the Quranic principles and the Prophetic traditions, we can safeguard ourselves from the worst outcome and attain success in this world and the hereafter. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) protect us from deviation and grant us the ability to follow the straight path.
