إنَّ المَرْءَ عَلى ما قَدَّمَ قادِمٌ، وعَلى ما خَلَّفَ نادِمٌ۔
Verily a person comes to that which he has sent forward [of his good deeds] and regrets [about] that which he has left behind.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Wealth And Riches)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. All praise and thanks are due to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states:
Verily a person comes to that which he has sent forward [of his good deeds] and regrets [about] that which he has left behind.
This enlightening saying of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the importance of our actions in this world and the consequences they will have in the hereafter.
Let us delve into the meanings of some key words in this Hadith. The word (qaddama) "قَدَّمَ" means to send forward or to precede. It refers to the good deeds and actions that a person performs during their lifetime. These deeds are like provisions that we send ahead for our journey in the hereafter. The word (khallafa) "خَلَّفَ" means to leave behind or to abandon. It refers to the missed opportunities, neglected obligations, and sins that a person leaves behind in their worldly life.
To understand the deeper meaning of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 286:
Allah does not burden a soul beyond that it can bear. It gets every good that it earns, and it suffers every ill that it earns.
This verse emphasizes that we are responsible for our own actions and that we will be held accountable for them. Our deeds, whether good or bad, will have consequences in this life and the hereafter.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Isra, verse 13, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says:
And We have made every man's actions to cling to his neck, and We will bring forth to him on the Day of Resurrection a book which he will find wide open.
This verse highlights that our actions will be presented to us on the Day of Resurrection, and we will have to face the consequences of what we have sent forward and what we have left behind.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement serves as a reminder for us to reflect upon our actions and their consequences. It urges us to be mindful of our deeds and to strive for righteousness in all aspects of our lives. We should not only focus on the present, but also consider the long-term effects of our actions.
For example, if a person consistently performs acts of kindness, such as helping the needy, being compassionate towards others, and spreading love and peace, they are sending forward good deeds that will benefit them in the hereafter. On the other hand, if a person engages in sinful activities, such as lying, cheating, and backbiting, they are leaving behind a trail of regrets and negative consequences.
This Hadith also teaches us the importance of repentance and seeking forgiveness for our past mistakes. When we realize the gravity of our sins and the potential regrets we may face in the hereafter, it should motivate us to turn back to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) in sincere repentance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) is the Most Merciful and Forgiving, and He accepts the repentance of His servants.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a powerful reminder for Muslims to be conscious of their actions and their consequences. It emphasizes the importance of sending forward good deeds and avoiding actions that will lead to regrets in the hereafter. By reflecting upon this Hadith and aligning our actions with the teachings of the Quran, we can strive to lead a righteous life and seek the pleasure of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) in both this world and the hereafter. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) guide us all on the straight path and grant us success in our endeavors.
