(Ghurar al-Hikam: Cognizance)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

Cognizance is the evidence of excellence (or nobility).

This profound statement emphasizes the significance of knowledge and understanding in attaining excellence and nobility. Let us delve deeper into the meaning of this Hadith in light of the Quran.

The word "ma'rifah" in Arabic refers to knowledge, awareness, or recognition. It encompasses the understanding of the truth and the recognition of one's own self and the Creator. It is through this knowledge that one can attain true excellence and nobility. The term "burhan" means evidence or proof, indicating that knowledge serves as a clear proof of one's virtuous character.

The Quran provides numerous verses that highlight the importance of knowledge and its role in distinguishing between right and wrong. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Zumar (39:9),

Are those who know equal to those who do not know?

This verse emphasizes the superiority of those who possess knowledge over those who are ignorant. It signifies that knowledge is a means of attaining excellence and nobility.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Mujadila (58:11), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states,

Allah will raise those who have believed among you and those who were given knowledge, by degrees.

This verse highlights that knowledge is a means of elevation and honor in the sight of Allah. It is through knowledge that individuals are distinguished and granted higher ranks.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement emphasizes that true excellence and nobility can only be achieved through knowledge and understanding. Knowledge enables individuals to make informed decisions, act with wisdom, and fulfill their responsibilities towards Allah and humanity. It is through knowledge that one can recognize the truth and distinguish between right and wrong.

For example, when faced with a moral dilemma, a person with knowledge will be able to make the right choice based on their understanding of the teachings of Islam. They will be aware of the consequences of their actions and strive to uphold justice and righteousness. This knowledge empowers individuals to act in a manner that is pleasing to Allah and beneficial to society.

Moreover, knowledge also leads to self-improvement and personal growth. It enables individuals to recognize their strengths and weaknesses, allowing them to work on their character and strive for self-improvement. Through knowledge, one can acquire the virtues of patience, humility, and compassion, which are essential for attaining excellence and nobility.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance of knowledge in attaining excellence and nobility. It highlights that true cognizance enables individuals to recognize the truth, make informed decisions, and act in a manner that is pleasing to Allah. By seeking knowledge and understanding, Muslims can strive for excellence in all aspects of their lives and fulfill their purpose as servants of Allah. May Allah grant us the wisdom and guidance to seek knowledge and attain true nobility.
