Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "اِسْمَحْ تَسُدْ۔" This can be translated into English as,

Give generously and you shall gain authority.

Let us delve into the significance of this Hadith in light of the Quran.

The word (Ismaḥ) "اِسْمَحْ" in this Hadith means "to give generously" or "to be forgiving." It implies a selfless act of giving without expecting anything in return. This act of generosity encompasses various forms, such as giving wealth, knowledge, time, or even forgiveness. It is an expression of kindness and compassion towards others, reflecting the noble character of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ).

The word (Tasud) "تَسُدْ" in this Hadith means "to gain authority" or "to attain power." It refers to the idea that through acts of generosity and forgiveness, one can attain a position of influence and authority. This authority is not limited to worldly power, but also includes spiritual authority and respect from others.

The Quran provides us with numerous verses that emphasize the importance of giving generously and the rewards associated with it. In Surah Al-Baqarah, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says, (Quran 2:245)

Who is it that would loan Allah a goodly loan so He may multiply it for him many times over? And it is Allah who withholds and grants abundance, and to Him you will be returned

This verse highlights the concept of giving generously as a means of seeking the pleasure of Allah and the promise of multiplied rewards.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Balad, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states, (Quran 90:12-17)

And what can make you know what is [breaking through] the difficult pass? It is the freeing of a slave or feeding on a day of severe hunger an orphan of near relationship or a needy person in misery. And then being among those who believed and advised one another to patience and advised one another to compassion

These verses emphasize the importance of giving to those in need and highlight the virtues of generosity and compassion.

Now, let us reflect on the wise message of this Hadith. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us that by giving generously and being forgiving, we not only benefit others but also gain authority and influence. This authority is not based on worldly power or material possessions, but on the respect, admiration, and love that others hold for us. When we selflessly give to others, we inspire them and become a source of guidance and support.

By giving generously, we also purify our souls and strengthen our connection with Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). It is a means of seeking His pleasure and following the example of the Prophet Muhammad () and the Ahl al-Bayt (عَلَيْهِمُ ٱلسَّلَامُ). Through acts of generosity, we emulate the noble qualities of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), who was known for his immense knowledge and wisdom.

Moreover, the consequences of giving generously are far-reaching. It creates a cycle of goodness, as the recipient of our generosity may be inspired to give to others in need. This ripple effect spreads kindness and compassion throughout society, fostering a sense of unity and solidarity among Muslims.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us the importance of giving generously and being forgiving. It reminds us that through acts of selflessness, we can attain authority and influence, not only in this world but also in the sight of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). Let us strive to embody the spirit of generosity and forgiveness, following the example of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) and seeking the pleasure of Allah in all that we do. May Allah bless us all with the ability to give generously and gain authority in the best possible manner.
