Rage is a bout of insanity because its possessor regrets [afterwards], but if he does not feel regret, then his insanity is firmly established.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Rage)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his purified progeny, and his noble companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the destructive nature of rage and its resemblance to a state of insanity. The word (al-hiddah) "الحِدَّةُ" refers to rage or anger, while (darbun) "ضَرْبٌ" means a bout or an episode. The word (al-junun) "الجُنُونِ" refers to insanity or madness. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) explains that rage is a form of temporary insanity because the one who experiences it often regrets their actions afterwards. However, if a person does not feel any regret for their rage, then their insanity becomes firmly established.
This profound Hadith can be further understood and supported by several verses from the Quran. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) warns us about the destructive consequences of anger and the importance of controlling it. In Surah Al-Imran (3:134), Allah says,
Those who spend [in Allah's cause] during ease and hardship and who restrain anger and who pardon the people - and Allah loves the doers of good.
This verse emphasizes the significance of restraining anger and forgiving others, as it is a characteristic that Allah loves.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Furqan (25:63), Allah describes the qualities of the servants of the Most Merciful, saying,
And the servants of the Most Merciful are those who walk upon the earth easily, and when the ignorant address them [harshly], they say [words of] peace.
This verse encourages us to respond to harsh words or actions with peace and tranquility, rather than allowing anger to consume us.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement serves as a reminder for Muslims to reflect upon their own behavior and the consequences of uncontrolled anger. When a person becomes enraged, they often lose control over their actions and say or do things that they later regret. This regret is a sign of sanity returning, as they realize the negative consequences of their rage.
The Imam's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) words also highlight the importance of self-reflection and self-control. It is crucial for Muslims to strive towards mastering their emotions and channeling them in a constructive manner. By doing so, we can avoid falling into a state of temporary insanity caused by uncontrolled rage.
Moreover, this Hadith teaches us about the significance of remorse and regret. When a person feels regret after experiencing rage, it indicates their recognition of the harm caused and their willingness to rectify their actions. This remorse is a sign of their sanity returning and their desire to seek forgiveness from Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).
On the other hand, if a person does not feel any regret for their rage, it signifies a deeper problem. Their insanity becomes firmly established, as they continue to engage in destructive behavior without any sense of remorse or accountability. This highlights the dangerous consequences of unchecked anger and the need for individuals to actively work on controlling their emotions.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a reminder for Muslims to reflect upon the destructive nature of rage and the importance of self-control. It emphasizes the temporary insanity that accompanies uncontrolled anger and the significance of feeling remorse and regret for one's actions. By striving to restrain our anger, seek forgiveness, and cultivate a sense of peace and tranquility, we can avoid falling into a state of insanity and maintain our sanity and well-being. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the strength to control our emotions and guide us on the path of righteousness.
