Hadith #3024

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. May peace and blessings be upon the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his family, his companions, and the righteous successors.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "اَلاِحْتِمالُ يُجِلُّ القَدْرَ۔" This can be translated into English as,

Tolerance dignifies one’s status.

The word (al-ithmal) "اَلاِحْتِمالُ" refers to the act of being patient, tolerant, and forbearing. It implies the ability to endure hardships, difficulties, and differences with grace and composure. It is a quality that elevates one's character and enhances their status in the eyes of Allah and fellow Muslims.

To understand the significance of tolerance in Islam, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) repeatedly emphasizes the importance of patience and forbearance in various verses. For example, in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:153), Allah says,

O you who have believed, seek help through patience and prayer. Indeed, Allah is with the patient.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Imran (3:134), Allah states,

Who spend [in the cause of Allah] during ease and hardship and who restrain anger and who pardon the people - and Allah loves the doers of good.

These verses highlight the virtues of patience, self-control, and forgiveness, which are all encompassed in the concept of tolerance. By practicing tolerance, Muslims demonstrate their commitment to following the teachings of the Quran and the example of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ).

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement emphasizes that tolerance not only reflects a person's inner strength and character but also dignifies their status in the eyes of Allah. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his profound knowledge and wisdom, emphasized the importance of tolerance as a means to elevate one's status. His own life serves as a shining example of this virtue. Despite facing numerous challenges and betrayals, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) remained patient and forgiving, always striving for the betterment of the Muslim community.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us that tolerance is a noble quality that dignifies one's status.
