اَلجَهْلُ بِالفَضائِلِ مِنْ أقْبَحِ الرَّذائِلِ۔
Ignorance of merits is one of the grossest demerits.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Ignorance)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
Ignorance of merits is one of the grossest demerits.
This enlightening Hadith emphasizes the importance of knowledge and understanding the virtues and merits that exist within Islam. Let us delve into the exegesis of this Hadith and explore its profound implications in light of the Quran.
Firstly, let us examine the key words in this Hadith. The word (ignorance) "جَهْلُ" refers to a lack of knowledge or understanding. It is the opposite of knowledge and wisdom. The word (merits) "فَضَائِلِ" refers to the virtues, excellences, and noble qualities that exist within Islam. And finally, the word (demerits) "رَذَائِلِ" refers to the opposite of merits, indicating the vices, shortcomings, and negative qualities.
The Quran repeatedly emphasizes the importance of seeking knowledge and understanding the virtues and merits of Islam. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Mujadila, verse 11,
Allah will raise those who have believed among you and those who were given knowledge, by degrees.
This verse highlights the elevated status of those who possess knowledge and emphasizes the importance of seeking it.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Zumar, verse 9, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
Are those who know equal to those who do not know?
This rhetorical question emphasizes the superiority of knowledge over ignorance. It highlights that those who possess knowledge and understand the merits of Islam are in a higher position than those who remain ignorant.
Now, let us reflect on the profound implications of Imam Ali's statement. Ignorance of the merits of Islam leads to a multitude of demerits. When Muslims remain unaware of the virtues and noble qualities of their faith, they are susceptible to falling into negative behaviors, misconceptions, and misunderstandings.
For example, if a Muslim is ignorant of the virtue of patience, they may become impatient and lose control in difficult situations. Similarly, if a Muslim is unaware of the importance of justice, they may engage in unjust actions. Ignorance of the merits of Islam can lead to the neglect of important principles such as compassion, forgiveness, and humility.
Moreover, ignorance of the merits of Islam can also result in the misinterpretation and misrepresentation of the religion. Muslims who lack knowledge may be easily influenced by false ideologies and misguided interpretations. This can lead to the spread of extremism, sectarianism, and intolerance within the Muslim community.
On the other hand, when Muslims strive to acquire knowledge and understand the merits of Islam, they are able to embody the noble qualities and virtues that the religion promotes. They become more compassionate, just, patient, and humble. They are able to navigate through life's challenges with wisdom and understanding.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us of the importance of knowledge and understanding the merits of Islam. Ignorance of these virtues leads to the manifestation of demerits and negative qualities. As Muslims, it is our duty to seek knowledge, reflect upon the teachings of the Quran, and strive to embody the noble qualities and virtues of Islam. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom and understanding to recognize and appreciate the merits of our faith.
