Hadith #3257

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

نِعْمَ الشّيمَةُ حُسْنُ الخُلْقِ

which translates to

The best trait is [having a] good character.

This concise statement by Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the significance and value of possessing good character in the eyes of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).

Let us delve into the meanings of the key words in this Hadith. (ni'ma) "نِعْمَ" signifies excellence, goodness, or virtue. The importance of good character is emphasized in numerous verses of the Quran. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Qalam (68:4),

And indeed, you are of a great moral character.

This verse praises the character of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) and serves as a reminder for Muslims to strive for excellence in their conduct. Similarly, in Surah Al-Hujurat (49:13), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states,

O mankind, indeed We have created you from male and female and made you peoples and tribes that you may know one another. Indeed, the most noble of you in the sight of Allah is the most righteous of you. Indeed, Allah is Knowing and Acquainted.
