Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

In this profound Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), he poses a thought-provoking question to the Muslims:

Where are those who lived longer than you and left a greater heritage?

This question highlights the importance of a meaningful and impactful life, one that is not merely measured by the number of years lived, but rather by the legacy one leaves behind.

Let us delve into the key words of this Hadith to gain a deeper understanding. The word (atwal) "أطْوَلَ" means "longer" or "extended," referring to the length of one's life. The word (a'zama) "أعْظَمَ" means "greater" or "more significant," indicating the impact and influence left by an individual. Lastly, the word (atharan) "آثاراً" translates to "heritage" or "legacy," encompassing the tangible and intangible contributions one makes during their lifetime.

To comprehend the impactful message of this Hadith, we turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) reminds us in Surah Al-Asr, (Quran 103:1-3)

By time, indeed, mankind is in loss, except for those who have believed and done righteous deeds and advised each other to truth and advised each other to patience.

This ayah emphasizes the importance of faith, righteous actions, and guiding others towards truth and patience. It is through these actions that one can leave a lasting and impactful heritage.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Baqarah, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states, (Quran 50:16)

And We have certainly created man and We know what his soul whispers to him, and We are closer to him than [his] jugular vein.

This ayah highlights the intimate knowledge Allah has of each individual, including their intentions, thoughts, and aspirations. It serves as a reminder that our actions and intentions are not hidden from Allah, and thus, we should strive to live a life that is pleasing to Him.

Reflecting on the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), we understand that the length of one's life is not the sole measure of success. Rather, it is the impact and legacy one leaves behind that truly matters. A person may live for a short period of time but leave a profound impact on society, while another may live for many years but fail to leave a lasting legacy.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his immense knowledge and wisdom, is a prime example of someone who lived a life of great significance. His contributions to Islamic jurisprudence, governance, and spirituality continue to inspire and guide Muslims to this day. His teachings and actions serve as a testament to the importance of knowledge, justice, and compassion.

As Muslims, we are reminded by this Hadith to strive for a life of purpose and meaning. We should seek knowledge, engage in righteous actions, and leave a positive impact on those around us. Whether it be through acts of charity, spreading knowledge, or embodying the values of Islam, we have the opportunity to leave a lasting legacy that will benefit generations to come.

May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom and guidance to live a life that is pleasing to Him and leave a positive impact on the world. May we be among those who are remembered for their good deeds and contributions. And may we strive to follow in the footsteps of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), the epitome of knowledge and righteousness.
