Hadith #7841

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

قَدْ شَخَصُوا عَنْ (مِنْ) مُسْتَقَّرِ الأجْداثِ، وصارُوا إلى مَقامِ الحِسابِ، وأُقيمَتْ عَلَيْهِمُ الحُجَجُ۔

This Hadith can be translated as,

They have risen from the resting place in their graves and gone towards the site of reckoning, and evidence has been brought against them.

Let us delve into the meaning of some important words in this Hadith. The word (shakhasoo) "شَخَصُوا" means "they have risen" or "they have emerged." It signifies the awakening of individuals from their graves, indicating the resurrection and the Day of Judgment. The term (mustaqar al-ajdath) "مُسْتَقَّرِ الأجْدَاثِ" refers to the resting place or the grave where the bodies of the deceased were buried. (maqam al-hisab) "مَقَامِ الحِسَابِ" refers to the site of reckoning, where individuals will be held accountable for their actions in this world.

To understand the connotation of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Zumar (39:42),

Allah takes the souls at the time of their death, and those that do not die [He takes] during their sleep. Then He keeps those for which He has decreed death and releases the others for a specified term. Indeed, in that are signs for a people who give thought.

This verse highlights the concept of the soul being taken by Allah at the time of death and being kept in a state of rest until the Day of Judgment. The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) complements this understanding by stating that individuals have risen from their graves, indicating the resurrection and the beginning of the accountability for their actions.

Furthermore, the Quran emphasizes the concept of accountability and the presentation of evidence on the Day of Judgment. In Surah Al-Zalzalah (99:6-8), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,

So whoever does an atom's weight of good will see it, and whoever does an atom's weight of evil will see it.

This verse highlights the meticulous recording of our deeds, both good and evil. On the Day of Judgment, this evidence will be presented against us, as mentioned in the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ).

The consequences of this Hadith are profound. It reminds us of the transient nature of this worldly life and the certainty of the Hereafter. It serves as a reminder that our actions in this life have consequences and will be accounted for on the Day of Judgment. This Hadith encourages us to reflect upon our deeds and strive to improve ourselves, seeking forgiveness and guidance from Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).
