Delay [and procrastination] is a chastisement of the soul.

— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Delay)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his noble Ahl al-Bayt (عَلَيْهِمُ ٱلسَّلَامُ), and his righteous companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "المطل عذاب النفس" which translates to

Delay [and procrastination] is a chastisement of the soul.

This impactful Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the negative consequences of procrastination and the importance of taking timely action.

The word (al-matl) "المطل" refers to delay or procrastination. It implies the act of postponing or putting off tasks or responsibilities. Procrastination is a common human tendency, but Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) warns us that it is a form of self-inflicted punishment for the soul.

To understand the significance of this Hadith, let us turn to the Quran for guidance. In Surah Al-Asr, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says, (Quran 103:1-3)

By time, indeed, mankind is in loss, except for those who have believed and done righteous deeds and advised each other to truth and advised each other to patience.

This ayah emphasizes the importance of taking action and making the most of our time. It reminds us that the passage of time is a precious resource, and if we waste it through procrastination, we will be at a loss. The believers who succeed are those who not only have faith but also actively engage in righteous deeds and encourage one another towards truth and patience.

Procrastination can have severe consequences on both our worldly affairs and our spiritual growth. In Surah Al-Ma'idah, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) warns, (Quran 5:90)

O you who have believed, indeed, intoxicants, gambling, [sacrificing on] stone alters [to other than Allah], and divining arrows are but defilement from the work of Satan, so avoid it that you may be successful.

This verse highlights the importance of avoiding harmful and sinful activities. Procrastination can lead us towards engaging in such activities, as it allows us to delay making positive changes in our lives. By procrastinating, we may find ourselves falling into the trap of engaging in actions that are displeasing to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement serves as a reminder that delaying important tasks and responsibilities not only hinders our progress but also affects our spiritual well-being. When we procrastinate, we neglect our duties towards Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and our fellow Muslims. We may delay acts of worship, neglect fulfilling our obligations, and miss out on opportunities to do good.

Procrastination can also have adverse effects on our personal and professional lives. It can lead to missed deadlines, unfinished projects, and a lack of productivity. This can cause stress, anxiety, and a sense of dissatisfaction. By delaying tasks, we hinder our own growth and potential.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) enlightening saying urges us to reflect on our actions and make a conscious effort to overcome procrastination. We should strive to be proactive, disciplined, and organized in managing our time and responsibilities. By taking immediate action, we can achieve success in both our worldly pursuits and our spiritual journey.

Let us remember the words of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) in Surah Al-Hadid, (Quran 57:21)

So hasten to forgiveness from your Lord and a garden as wide as the heavens and earth, prepared for the righteous.

May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom and motivation to overcome procrastination and make the most of our time. May we strive to fulfill our duties towards Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and our fellow Muslims, and may He bless us with success in this world and the Hereafter.
