فِي الشُّكْرِ تَكُونُ الزّيادَةُ۔
In gratitude there is increase.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Gratitude And The Grateful)
Bismillah, All praise is due to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ), the Most Merciful and the Most Compassionate. We seek His blessings and guidance. We send our salutations upon the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), the seal of the Prophets, and his purified progeny, the Ahl al-Bayt (عَلَيْهِمُ ٱلسَّلَامُ). We also extend our greetings to the noble companions of the Prophet (ﷺ), who sacrificed their lives for the sake of Islam.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
In gratitude there is increase.
This beautiful Hadith emphasizes the importance of expressing gratitude and its consequential increase in blessings. To fully comprehend the depth of this Hadith, let us delve into the meanings of the key words.
The word "shukr" in Arabic refers to gratitude or thankfulness. It is derived from the root word "shakara," which means to acknowledge, appreciate, and recognize the blessings of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). Gratitude is not merely a feeling, but an action that involves expressing thanks to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) through words, deeds, and attitudes.
The word "ziyadah" means increase or growth. In the context of this Hadith, it signifies the additional blessings and favors bestowed upon those who express gratitude. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) promises to increase His blessings upon those who are grateful, both in this world and in the hereafter.
The concept of gratitude is deeply rooted in the Quran. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) repeatedly emphasizes the importance of expressing gratitude and highlights the benefits it brings. In Surah Ibrahim, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says, (Quran 14:7)
And [remember] when your Lord proclaimed, 'If you are grateful, I will surely increase you [in favor]; but if you deny, indeed, My punishment is severe.'
This ayah clearly establishes the correlation between gratitude and increase. When we express gratitude to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ), He promises to bestow upon us even more blessings. This increase can be in various forms, such as increased provision, increased guidance, increased peace of mind, and increased spiritual growth.
Another verse that supports the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) is found in Surah Ibrahim, where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says, (Quran 14:34)
And [remember] when your Lord proclaimed, 'If you are grateful, I will surely increase you [in favor]; but if you deny, indeed, My punishment is severe.'
This ayah emphasizes the importance of gratitude as a means of attaining Allah's (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) favor and protection. It serves as a reminder that ingratitude leads to severe consequences, while gratitude leads to an increase in blessings.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us that gratitude is not only a virtue but also a means to attain further blessings from Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). When we express gratitude for the blessings we have been bestowed, we acknowledge Allah's (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) favor upon us. This recognition leads to an increase in blessings and a deepening of our relationship with Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).
Furthermore, gratitude has a transformative effect on our attitude and perspective. It helps us focus on the positive aspects of our lives and cultivates contentment and satisfaction. Gratitude also fosters humility and recognition of our dependence on Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). It reminds us that all blessings come from Him and encourages us to use those blessings in a manner that pleases Him.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the significance of gratitude in our lives. By expressing gratitude to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ), we invite an increase in His blessings upon us. Gratitude is not only a virtue but also a means to attain further blessings and deepen our relationship with Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). Let us strive to be grateful Muslims, recognizing and appreciating the countless blessings bestowed upon us by our Creator. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to express gratitude and increase us in His blessings.
