(Ghurar al-Hikam: Seclusion)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "مَنِ اعْتَزَلَ سَلِمَ۔" This can be translated as,

One who secludes [from the people] himself remains safe.

Let us delve into the connotation of this Hadith in light of the Quran.

The word (i'tazala) "اعْتَزَلَ" in this Hadith refers to the act of secluding oneself or withdrawing from society. It implies a deliberate choice to distance oneself from the company of others. This seclusion can be physical, where one physically separates themselves from others, or it can be spiritual, where one disconnects from worldly distractions and focuses on their inner self.

To understand the significance of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. In Surah Al-Asr, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says, (Quran 103:1-3)

By time, indeed, mankind is in loss, except for those who have believed and done righteous deeds and advised each other to truth and advised each other to patience.

This ayah highlights the importance of surrounding oneself with righteous company and engaging in acts of goodness. However, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) provides an alternative perspective. It suggests that there are times when seclusion can be beneficial for an individual's spiritual well-being and protection.

Seclusion can serve as a means to protect oneself from negative influences and temptations. It allows one to focus on their relationship with Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and seek inner peace and tranquility. By distancing oneself from the distractions of the world, one can engage in self-reflection, introspection, and spiritual growth.

In Surah Al-Anfal, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says, (Quran 8:24)

O you who have believed, respond to Allah and to the Messenger when he calls you to that which gives you life. And know that Allah intervenes between a man and his heart and that to Him you will be gathered.

This ayah emphasizes the importance of responding to the call of Allah and His Messenger () for guidance and spiritual nourishment. Seclusion can provide the opportunity to respond to this call and strengthen one's connection with Allah. It allows individuals to detach themselves from worldly distractions and focus on their spiritual journey.

However, it is important to note that seclusion should not be seen as a means to completely isolate oneself from society. Islam encourages believers to actively participate in their communities, fulfill their responsibilities, and contribute positively to society. The seclusion mentioned in the Hadith is a temporary retreat for spiritual rejuvenation, not a permanent state of isolation.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his profound knowledge and wisdom, understood the importance of balancing seclusion with active participation in society. He would often retreat to the mosque for spiritual contemplation, but he also actively engaged in social and political affairs to establish justice and uphold the principles of Islam.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us the value of seclusion as a means to protect ourselves from negative influences and distractions. It reminds us to prioritize our spiritual well-being and seek inner peace through self-reflection and connection with Allah. However, it is crucial to strike a balance between seclusion and active participation in society, following the example of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) who combined knowledge, spirituality, and social responsibility. May we all find moments of seclusion to strengthen our connection with Allah and seek His guidance.
