عِنْدَ الصَّدْمَةِ الأُولى يَكُونُ صَبْرُ النُّبَلاءِ۔
It is during the first blow [of adversity] that the patience of the noble ones is seen.

(Ghurar al-Hikam: Patience And The Patient)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, the Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
عِنْدَ الصَّدْمَةِ الأُولى يَكُونُ صَبْرُ النُّبَلاءِ۔
This can be translated as,
It is during the first blow [of adversity] that the patience of the noble ones is seen.
Let us delve into the deeper meaning of this profound Hadith in light of the Quranic teachings. The word (sadma) "صَدْمَةِ" refers to a blow or a sudden shock, which can be physical, emotional, or spiritual in nature. It represents the unexpected challenges and trials that we face in life. The word (awla) "أُولَى" means the first or initial, indicating that the true test of patience occurs at the very beginning of adversity.
The Hadith highlights the virtue of patience, particularly in the face of hardships. Patience is a quality highly regarded in Islam, and it is emphasized in numerous verses of the Quran. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:153),
O you who have believed, seek help through patience and prayer. Indeed, Allah is with the patient.
This verse emphasizes the importance of patience as a means of seeking assistance from Allah during challenging times.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Asr (103:3), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states,
Except for those who have believed and done righteous deeds and advised each other to truth and advised each other to patience.
This verse highlights the significance of patience as one of the key qualities possessed by those who have faith and engage in righteous actions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us that the true test of patience lies in how we respond to the initial blow of adversity. It is easy to remain patient when everything is going smoothly, but it is during the first moments of hardship that our true character is revealed. The noble ones, who possess a deep understanding and knowledge, demonstrate their patience and resilience in the face of adversity.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) himself was a paragon of knowledge and wisdom. His unwavering patience and steadfastness in the face of numerous trials and tribulations serve as a shining example for all Muslims. He faced immense challenges throughout his life, yet he remained patient and steadfast, never wavering in his commitment to the truth.
When we encounter the first blow of adversity, it is crucial to remember that it is a test from Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). It is an opportunity for us to demonstrate our faith, trust in Allah's plan, and rely on His guidance and support. By remaining patient and steadfast, we not only strengthen our own character but also inspire others with our resilience and determination.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us that the true test of patience lies in how we respond to the initial blow of adversity. It reminds us of the importance of remaining patient and steadfast in the face of challenges, just as the noble ones do. By seeking solace in the Quranic teachings on patience and drawing inspiration from the example of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), we can navigate through the trials of life with grace and resilience. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the strength to endure and the wisdom to learn from every test we face.
