هُدِيَ مَنْ حَسُنَ إسْلامُهُ۔
One who practices Islam properly is [truly] guided.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Muslims)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states:
هُدِيَ مَنْ حَسُنَ إسْلامُهُ۔
This can be translated as:
One who practices Islam properly is [truly] guided.
Let us delve into the deeper meaning of this thought-provoking saying of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) and explore its significance in light of the Quran.
The word (hudiya) "هُدِيَ" in the Hadith refers to guidance. It signifies being led towards the right path, both in terms of belief and actions. This guidance is not merely external, but it encompasses the inner dimensions of faith as well. It is a comprehensive guidance that encompasses all aspects of a person's life.
To understand the importance of guidance in Islam, we turn to the Quran, where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) repeatedly emphasizes the significance of being guided. In Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 2, Allah says: (Quran 2:2)
This is the Book about which there is no doubt, a guidance for those conscious of Allah.
This verse highlights that the Quran itself is a source of guidance for those who are mindful of Allah.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Fatiha, we recite in every unit of our prayers: (Quran 1:6)
Guide us to the straight path.
This supplication reflects our constant need for guidance from Allah, as we acknowledge that without His guidance, we may deviate from the right path.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states that one who practices Islam properly is truly guided. This implies that true guidance is not attained merely by professing faith, but by actively living and embodying the teachings of Islam. It is through sincere devotion, righteous actions, and adherence to the principles of Islam that one can attain true guidance.
To further understand the significance of practicing Islam properly, we turn to the Quran. In Surah Al-Imran, verse 102, Allah says: (Quran 3:102)
O you who have believed, fear Allah as He should be feared and do not die except as Muslims [in submission to Him].
This verse emphasizes the importance of practicing Islam with sincerity and obedience to Allah's commands.
Practicing Islam properly involves not only fulfilling the obligatory acts of worship but also embodying the values and principles of Islam in our daily lives. It entails striving for excellence in character, upholding justice, showing kindness and compassion towards others, and seeking knowledge.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his profound knowledge and wisdom, emphasizes the importance of knowledge in attaining true guidance. He once said,
Knowledge is the guide, and action is its proof.
This statement highlights that knowledge is the key to understanding and practicing Islam properly, and it is through action that the sincerity and authenticity of one's faith are demonstrated.
When one practices Islam properly, they become a source of inspiration and guidance for others. Their actions reflect the beauty and truth of Islam, attracting others towards the path of righteousness. They become a beacon of light in a world filled with darkness, guiding others towards the straight path.
Conversely, neglecting the proper practice of Islam can lead to spiritual stagnation and deviation from the right path. It is essential for Muslims to constantly strive for self-improvement, seeking knowledge, and implementing it in their lives. By doing so, they not only attain true guidance for themselves but also become a means of guidance for others.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us of the importance of practicing Islam properly to attain true guidance. It emphasizes that guidance is not a mere external label but a comprehensive and transformative journey that encompasses all aspects of our lives. By embodying the teachings of Islam, seeking knowledge, and sincerely practicing our faith, we can become beacons of guidance, leading ourselves and others towards the path of righteousness. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to practice Islam properly and be guided by His mercy and wisdom.
