مَنْ جَهِلَ قَدْرَهُ جَهِلَ كُلَّ قَدْر۔
One who is ignorant of his own worth does not know anyone’s worth.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Status And Worth)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
مَنْ جَهِلَ قَدْرَهُ جَهِلَ كُلَّ قَدْر۔
This thought-provoking Hadith can be translated as,
One who is ignorant of his own worth does not know anyone’s worth.
Let us delve into the depths of this Hadith and explore its meaning in light of the Quran.
The word (jahila) "جَهِلَ" in this Hadith refers to ignorance or lack of knowledge. It signifies a state of unawareness or unfamiliarity with something. (qadrah) "قَدْرَهُ" means one's own worth or value. It encompasses the recognition and understanding of one's abilities, talents, and potential. The word (kulla) "كُلَّ" means everyone or anyone. Hence, the Hadith emphasizes that if a person is ignorant of their own worth, they will also be ignorant of the worth of others.
To comprehend the significance of this Hadith, let us turn to the Quran for guidance. In Surah Al-Hujurat (49:13), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
O mankind, indeed We have created you from male and female and made you peoples and tribes that you may know one another. Indeed, the most noble of you in the sight of Allah is the most righteous of you. Indeed, Allah is Knowing and Acquainted.
This verse highlights the importance of recognizing and appreciating the diversity among people. It emphasizes that true worth lies in righteousness and piety, not in superficial factors such as lineage, wealth, or social status.
When a person is unaware of their own worth, they fail to acknowledge their own strengths, talents, and capabilities. Consequently, they are unable to recognize and appreciate the worth of others. This ignorance leads to a lack of empathy, understanding, and respect for others. It hinders the establishment of harmonious relationships and prevents the development of a just and equitable society.
Moreover, the Quran repeatedly emphasizes the importance of self-reflection and self-awareness. In Surah Al-Hashr (59:18), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
O you who have believed, fear Allah. And let every soul look to what it has put forth for tomorrow - and fear Allah. Indeed, Allah is Acquainted with what you do.
This verse urges individuals to introspect and evaluate their actions, intentions, and contributions. It encourages self-assessment and self-improvement, which are essential for recognizing one's own worth.
When a person is ignorant of their own worth, they may underestimate their abilities and settle for mediocrity. They may lack the motivation and confidence to strive for excellence and make a positive impact on society. Conversely, when individuals are aware of their own worth, they are more likely to pursue personal growth, contribute to their communities, and uplift others.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a profound reminder for Muslims to recognize and appreciate their own worth. It highlights the importance of self-awareness and self-reflection in understanding the worth of others. By acknowledging our own abilities and potential, we can develop empathy, respect, and compassion for our fellow human beings. Let us strive to cultivate a society where everyone's worth is recognized and valued, based on their righteousness and piety, as emphasized in the Quran. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom and humility to understand our own worth and the worth of others.
