سَبَبُ الحَيْرَةِ الشَّكُّ۔
The cause of perplexity is doubt.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Doubt And Misgiving)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure and noble family, and his righteous companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states: "سَبَبُ الحَيْرَةِ الشَّكُّ۔" This translates to:
The cause of perplexity is doubt.
Let us delve into the essence of this statement in the light of the Quran.
The word (hayrah) "حَيْرَةِ" in this Hadith refers to perplexity or confusion. It is a state of uncertainty and indecision that arises when one is faced with conflicting thoughts or choices. The word (shakk) "شَّكُّ" means doubt, which is the root cause of this perplexity. Doubt can cloud our judgment, hinder our decision-making process, and lead us astray from the path of truth.
The Quran provides us with numerous verses that emphasize the importance of certainty and warn against the dangers of doubt. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Hujurat (49:15):
Indeed, the believers are only the ones who have believed in Allah and His Messenger and then doubt not but strive with their properties and their lives in the cause of Allah. It is those who are the truthful.
This verse highlights the significance of unwavering faith and the detrimental effects of doubt. True believers are those who firmly believe in Allah and His Messenger (ﷺ) without any trace of doubt. They are the ones who wholeheartedly dedicate their resources and lives in the cause of Allah. Their certainty drives them to take decisive actions and make righteous choices.
Another verse that sheds light on the consequences of doubt is found in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:28):
How can you disbelieve in Allah when you were lifeless and He brought you to life; then He will cause you to die, then He will bring you [back] to life, and then to Him you will be returned.
This verse reminds us of the miraculous creation of human beings and the power of Allah to bring life from nothingness. It challenges the notion of disbelief and highlights the absurdity of doubting the existence and power of Allah. Doubt in the face of such clear signs of His existence can lead to a state of confusion and uncertainty, distancing us from the truth.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) amazing Hadith serves as a reminder to Muslims of the importance of seeking knowledge and avoiding doubt. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) was known for his deep understanding and wisdom, and his words carry great weight. Doubt can hinder our spiritual growth, weaken our resolve, and lead us away from the straight path.
When faced with doubts, it is crucial for Muslims to turn to the Quran and seek guidance from Allah. The Quran is a source of divine knowledge and wisdom that provides clarity and dispels doubts. By studying the Quran and reflecting upon its teachings, we can strengthen our faith, gain certainty, and overcome the perplexity caused by doubt.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us of the detrimental effects of doubt and the importance of seeking certainty in our faith. Doubt can lead to confusion and indecision, hindering our spiritual growth. By seeking knowledge, reflecting on the Quran, and turning to Allah for guidance, we can overcome doubt and attain a firm and unwavering faith. May Allah grant us the wisdom and strength to overcome doubt and remain steadfast on the path of truth.
