اَلفِتْنَةُ (القُنْيَة) مَقْرُونَةٌ بِالعَناءِ۔
Unrest (or acquisition [of property]) is accompanied by hardship.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Unrest)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
Unrest (or acquisition [of property]) is accompanied by hardship.
Let us delve into the deeper meaning of this thought-provoking Hadith in light of the Quran.
The word "fitnah" in Arabic refers to unrest, turmoil, or tribulation. It can also denote the acquisition of wealth or property. The word "maqrunah" means that this unrest or acquisition is closely linked to hardship. It implies that when one is engaged in a state of unrest or involved in the pursuit of material possessions, it is often accompanied by difficulties and challenges.
To understand the significance of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. In Surah Al-Baqarah, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says, (Quran 2:155)
And We will surely test you with something of fear and hunger and a loss of wealth and lives and fruits, but give good tidings to the patient
This verse highlights that trials and tribulations are an inevitable part of life. They can manifest in various forms, including fear, hunger, loss of wealth, and even the acquisition of wealth itself.
When we strive to acquire material possessions, it often comes at the expense of our peace of mind, contentment, and spiritual well-being. The pursuit of wealth can lead to a state of restlessness, as we become consumed by the desire for more. This constant striving can result in hardships such as stress, anxiety, and a neglect of our spiritual obligations.
Furthermore, the Quran emphasizes the transient nature of worldly possessions. In Surah Al-Hadid, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states, (Quran 57:20)
Know that the life of this world is but amusement and diversion and adornment and boasting to one another and competition in increase of wealth and children - like the example of a rain whose [resulting] plant growth pleases the tillers; then it dries and you see it turned yellow; then it becomes [scattered] debris
This verse reminds us that the pursuit of worldly possessions is temporary and fleeting. Just as a plant withers away after a period of growth, material wealth can also diminish and lose its value. Therefore, attaching our hearts solely to the acquisition of wealth can lead to disappointment and dissatisfaction.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement serves as a reminder for Muslims to prioritize their spiritual well-being over the pursuit of material possessions. It encourages us to seek contentment and tranquility through acts of worship, remembrance of Allah, and the cultivation of virtuous qualities.
By focusing on the eternal rewards promised by Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ), we can find solace and peace amidst the trials and tribulations of life. The hardships that accompany the pursuit of wealth can be alleviated by redirecting our efforts towards acts of charity, kindness, and fulfilling our obligations towards Allah and His creation.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us of the inherent difficulties that come with the pursuit of material possessions. It urges us to prioritize our spiritual well-being and seek contentment through acts of worship and virtuous deeds. By doing so, we can find true peace and tranquility in this world and the hereafter. May Allah guide us all on the path of righteousness and grant us success in both worlds.
