Hadith #7342

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "العلم دليل" which translates to

Knowledge is a guide

in English. This concise statement holds profound wisdom and serves as a reminder of the importance and value of knowledge in the life of a Muslim.

The word (knowledge) "علم" in this Hadith refers to the understanding and awareness of facts, principles, and truths. It encompasses both religious and worldly knowledge. Knowledge is not limited to the acquisition of information, but it also includes the application of that knowledge in one's life. It is a comprehensive term that encompasses intellectual, spiritual, and practical aspects.

The word (guide) "دليل" refers to something that leads, directs, and shows the way. It is a source of guidance and enlightenment. In the context of this Hadith, knowledge is described as a guide because it illuminates the path of righteousness and leads individuals towards the truth. The Quran provides numerous verses that emphasize the significance of knowledge and its role as a guide in the life of a Muslim. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Zumar (39:9),

Say, 'Are those who know equal to those who do not know?' Only they will remember [who are] people of understanding.

This verse highlights the distinction between those who possess knowledge and those who do not. It emphasizes that knowledge is a means of remembrance and understanding, enabling individuals to distinguish between right and wrong.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Anfal (8:22), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states,

Indeed, the worst of living creatures in the sight of Allah are the deaf and dumb who do not use reason.

This verse highlights the importance of using reason and intellect, which are cultivated through knowledge. It implies that those who neglect knowledge and fail to utilize their intellectual faculties are deprived of guidance and understanding.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement that
