اَلْيَقينُ عِبادَةٌ۔
Certitude is worship.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Certitude)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "الْيَقِينُ عِبَادَةٌ" which translates to "Certitude is worship." This concise statement holds profound wisdom and serves as a guiding principle for Muslims in their spiritual journey.
Let us delve into the meaning of the key words in this Hadith. (al-yaqeen) "الْيَقِينُ" refers to certitude or absolute conviction. It is the highest level of faith, where there is no room for doubt or hesitation. (ibadah) "عِبَادَةٌ" means worship, encompassing all acts of devotion and obedience to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).
To understand the significance of certitude as worship, we turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Hujurat (49:15),
The believers are only those who have believed in Allah and His Messenger and then doubt not but strive with their properties and their lives in the cause of Allah. It is those who are the truthful.
This verse emphasizes the importance of unwavering faith and conviction in the path of Allah.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Hajj (22:62), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states,
That is because Allah is the Truth, and that which they call upon other than Him is falsehood, and because Allah is the Most High, the Grand.
Here, Allah reminds us that true certainty lies in recognizing His absolute truth and rejecting any false deities or beliefs.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement highlights the profound connection between certitude and worship. When our faith is firm and unwavering, it becomes the driving force behind our acts of worship. Every prayer, every fast, every act of charity is infused with the power of certitude, transforming them from mere rituals into sincere acts of devotion.
Certitude as worship has far-reaching implications in our lives. It motivates us to seek knowledge and deepen our understanding of Islam. It compels us to reflect upon the signs of Allah's creation and recognize His presence in every aspect of our existence. It inspires us to strive for excellence in our character, relationships, and responsibilities, knowing that our actions are a reflection of our faith.
Moreover, certitude as worship instills in us a sense of purpose and resilience. It enables us to face challenges and trials with unwavering trust in Allah's plan. It empowers us to resist temptations and avoid sinful actions, knowing that our faith is rooted in absolute conviction.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) enlightening Hadith serves as a reminder to Muslims of the importance of cultivating certitude in our hearts. It calls us to reflect on the quality of our faith and strive for a deeper level of conviction. By embracing certitude as worship, we can transform every aspect of our lives into acts of devotion and draw closer to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).
May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the strength to nurture certitude in our hearts and make our worship a means of drawing closer to Him. May He bless us with unwavering faith and guide us on the path of righteousness.
