مَنْ قَنِعَ بِرَأيِهِ فَقَدْ هَلَكَ۔
One who is content with his [own] opinion is indeed doomed.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Opinions And The Opinonated)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
مَنْ قَنِعَ بِرَأيِهِ فَقَدْ هَلَكَ۔
This can be translated as,
One who is content with his [own] opinion is indeed doomed.
Let us now delve into the deeper meaning of this enlightening saying in light of the Quran. The word (qani'a) "قَنِعَ" in this Hadith refers to being satisfied or content with one's own opinion. It implies a sense of arrogance and self-sufficiency, where an individual believes that their own understanding and perspective is sufficient, disregarding the importance of seeking knowledge and guidance from divine sources.
The Quran emphasizes the importance of seeking knowledge and guidance from Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and His messengers. In Surah Al-Baqarah, Allah says, (Quran 2:170)
And when it is said to them, 'Follow what Allah has revealed,' they say, 'Rather, we will follow that upon which we found our fathers.' Even if Satan was inviting them to the punishment of the Blaze?
This verse highlights the danger of blindly following one's own opinions or the traditions of their forefathers without seeking the truth from divine sources.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement serves as a reminder to Muslims that relying solely on one's own opinions and disregarding the guidance of Allah and His messengers can lead to destruction and ruin. It is essential for Muslims to seek knowledge, study the Quran, and follow the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) and his Ahl al-Bayt (عَلَيْهِمُ ٱلسَّلَامُ) in order to attain true guidance and success in this life and the hereafter.
The consequences of being content with one's own opinion can be seen in various aspects of life. For instance, in matters of faith, if a person believes that their understanding of Islam is sufficient and refuses to seek guidance from the Quran and the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) and his Ahl al-Bayt (عَلَيْهِمُ ٱلسَّلَامُ), they may fall into misinterpretations and deviations from the true path of Islam.
Similarly, in matters of personal relationships and decision-making, if an individual is unwilling to consider the perspectives and advice of others, they may miss out on valuable insights and make poor choices. This can lead to conflicts, misunderstandings, and negative consequences in both personal and professional spheres.
On the other hand, those who are humble and open-minded, seeking guidance from divine sources and being receptive to the wisdom of others, are more likely to make informed decisions and lead a righteous and successful life. The Quran encourages Muslims to seek knowledge and consult with others in Surah Al-Imran, where Allah says, (Quran 42:38)
And those who have responded to their lord and established prayer and whose affair is [determined by] consultation among themselves, and from what We have provided them, they spend.
In conclusion, Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement serves as a powerful reminder for Muslims to avoid the trap of being content with their own opinions and to seek guidance from divine sources. By humbly seeking knowledge, consulting with others, and following the teachings of the Quran and the Ahl al-Bayt (عَلَيْهِمُ ٱلسَّلَامُ), Muslims can attain true guidance and success in this life and the hereafter. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom to seek knowledge and guidance from the right sources and protect us from the dangers of arrogance and self-sufficiency.
