How good a foresight precaution is!

— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Precaution)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. May peace and blessings be upon the Prophet Muhammad (), his purified progeny (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), and his noble companions.

The Arabic phrase of the Hadith is "نِعْمَ الحَزْمُ الاِسْتِظْهارُ۔" which translates to

How good a foresight precaution is!

This Hadith highlights the importance and excellence of being proactive and taking precautionary measures in various aspects of life.

The word (hazm) "حَزْمُ" refers to foresight or prudence, which involves the ability to anticipate and plan for potential challenges or difficulties. It is the quality of being proactive and taking preventive measures to avoid harm or negative consequences. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the significance of this quality by describing it as (ni'ma) "نِعْمَ", meaning "how good" or "what a blessing."

To understand the significance of foresight and precaution, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) repeatedly emphasizes the importance of planning, preparation, and taking precautionary measures in various situations.

In Surah Al-Baqarah, Allah says, (Quran 2:197)

And take provisions, but indeed, the best provision is Taqwa (piety). So fear Me, O you of understanding.

This verse highlights the importance of taking provisions for a journey, which is a practical example of being proactive and prepared. However, Allah reminds us that the best provision is Taqwa, which is the consciousness and fear of Allah, as it is the ultimate source of guidance and protection.

Another verse that emphasizes the importance of foresight and precaution is in Surah Al-Hashr, where Allah says, (Quran 3:152)

And if it had not been for Allah's favor upon you and His mercy... you would have been overcome by them. So follow the guidance of Allah and be cautious.

This verse reminds us that Allah's favor and mercy are the ultimate sources of success and protection. However, it also emphasizes the need to follow Allah's guidance and be cautious in our actions, as this is a means of attaining His favor and protection.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement in the Hadith encourages Muslims to adopt a proactive approach in all aspects of life. It reminds us to anticipate challenges, plan ahead, and take necessary precautions to avoid harm or negative consequences. By doing so, we can protect ourselves and others from potential dangers and ensure a better future.

For example, in matters of health, being proactive means adopting a healthy lifestyle, eating nutritious food, exercising regularly, and seeking medical advice when needed. This not only helps in preventing diseases but also promotes overall well-being. Similarly, in financial matters, being proactive involves budgeting, saving, and investing wisely to secure a stable future.

Moreover, this Hadith also has broader implications in the realm of spirituality. It reminds us to be proactive in our relationship with Allah, by constantly seeking His forgiveness, performing acts of worship, and striving to improve our character. By doing so, we can protect ourselves from spiritual harm and ensure our success in the hereafter.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance and excellence of foresight and precaution. It encourages Muslims to be proactive in all aspects of life, taking necessary measures to avoid harm and ensure a better future. By following this advice, we can protect ourselves and others, both in this world and the hereafter. May Allah grant us the wisdom and guidance to be proactive and take precautionary measures in all aspects of our lives.
