Espouse moderation in food, for indeed it is farther from extravagance, healthier for the body and more assisting in the performance of worship.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Moderation)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance of moderation in our consumption of food. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) advises Muslims to adopt a balanced approach when it comes to eating, as it is not only beneficial for our physical health but also aids us in our worship.
Let us delve deeper into the words of this Hadith to gain a better understanding. The word (qasd) "قَصْدِ" refers to moderation or balance. It implies avoiding extremes and finding a middle ground. (mata'im) "مَطَاعِمِ" refers to food or meals. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) is specifically addressing the way we approach our meals.
To support the importance of moderation in food, we can turn to the Quran. In Surah Al-A'raf (7:31), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) warns against excessiveness and extravagance in eating and drinking:
O children of Adam, take your adornment at every masjid, and eat and drink, but be not excessive. Indeed, He likes not those who commit excess.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-A'raf (7:32), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) reminds us that moderation is the best approach:
Say, 'Who has forbidden the adornment of Allah which He has produced for His servants and the good [lawful] things of provision?' Say, 'They are for those who believe during the worldly life [but] exclusively for them on the Day of Resurrection.' Thus, We detail the verses for a people who know.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights three key benefits of practicing moderation in our meals. Firstly, it helps us avoid extravagance. Extravagance refers to excessive indulgence in food, going beyond what is necessary or beneficial. By practicing moderation, we distance ourselves from this wasteful behavior and instead adopt a more mindful approach to our consumption.
Secondly, moderation in food is healthier for our bodies. Overeating and consuming unhealthy foods can lead to various health issues such as obesity, heart disease, and diabetes. By eating in moderation, we maintain a balanced diet, ensuring that our bodies receive the necessary nutrients without putting excessive strain on our health.
Lastly, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) mentions that moderation in food assists us in the performance of worship. When we eat in moderation, we avoid the discomfort and lethargy that often accompanies overeating. This enables us to maintain a higher level of physical energy and mental clarity, making it easier for us to engage in acts of worship such as prayer, recitation of the Quran, and other forms of devotion.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a reminder for Muslims to adopt moderation in their consumption of food. By doing so, we distance ourselves from extravagance, maintain good health, and enhance our ability to engage in acts of worship. Let us strive to follow the teachings of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) and find balance in all aspects of our lives, including our meals. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom and strength to practice moderation and lead a righteous life.
