مَنْ يَغْلِبُ هَواهُ يَعِزَّ۔
Whoever overcomes his vain desire is honoured.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Vain Desire)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
مَنْ يَغْلِبُ هَواهُ يَعِزَّ۔
This can be translated as,
Whoever overcomes his vain desire is honored.
Let us delve into the connotation of this statement and explore its implications in light of the Quran.
The word (yaghlibu) "يَغْلِبُ" in the Hadith means to overcome or conquer. It refers to the act of gaining control over one's desires and inclinations. This implies that a person should not be enslaved by their base desires, but rather strive to master them. By doing so, they attain a higher level of self-discipline and self-control.
The term (hawah) "هَواهُ" refers to vain desires or whims. These are the desires that are driven by the ego and are often contrary to what is right and just. They can lead a person astray and hinder their spiritual growth. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance of overcoming these vain desires in order to attain honor and dignity.
The Quran provides us with numerous verses that support the exegesis of this Hadith. In Surah Al-Qasas, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says, (Quran 90:4-5)
And We have certainly created man to be in hardship. Does he think that never will anyone overcome him?
This verse highlights the struggle that humans face in overcoming their desires and inclinations. It reminds us that we are constantly tested and challenged in our journey towards self-control.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Qamar, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states, (Quran 12:53)
Indeed, the soul is a persistent enjoiner of evil, except those upon which my Lord has mercy.
This verse acknowledges the inherent inclination of the soul towards evil and desires that are contrary to righteousness. It emphasizes the need for divine guidance and mercy to overcome these inclinations.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith serves as a reminder to Muslims that they should strive to overcome their vain desires and align their actions with the teachings of Islam. By doing so, they attain honor and dignity in the eyes of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). This honor is not limited to worldly recognition but extends to the spiritual realm as well.
When a person conquers their vain desires, they are able to make decisions based on wisdom and righteousness rather than being swayed by their whims. This leads to a life of discipline, integrity, and moral excellence. Such individuals become role models for others and are respected by their communities.
Conversely, those who succumb to their vain desires and allow them to dictate their actions often find themselves in a state of moral degradation and spiritual decline. They may experience temporary gratification but ultimately suffer the consequences of their choices. Their honor is compromised, and they lose the respect of others.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) amazing Hadith serves as a call to Muslims to strive for self-discipline and self-control. It encourages us to resist the temptations of our ego and align our desires with the teachings of Islam. By doing so, we can attain true honor and dignity, both in this world and in the hereafter.
May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the strength and guidance to overcome our vain desires and lead a life of righteousness. May we be among those who are honored in His sight. Ameen.
