لا فَقْرَ كَالجَهْلِ۔
There is no poverty like ignorance.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Ignorance)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "لا فَقْرَ كَالجَهْلِ۔" This powerful statement translates to,
There is no poverty like ignorance.
Let us delve into the meaning of this Hadith in light of the Quran.
The word (faqra) "فَقْرَ" in Arabic refers to poverty, a state of lacking material resources or being in need. However, in this context, it carries a deeper connotation. It signifies a state of deprivation, not only in terms of material possessions but also in knowledge and understanding. It highlights the dire consequences of ignorance and emphasizes the importance of seeking knowledge.
The word (jahli) "جَهْلِ" means ignorance, the lack of knowledge or awareness. It refers to a state of being uninformed, unaware, or misguided. Ignorance can manifest in various forms, such as ignorance of religious teachings, lack of understanding of the world around us, or ignorance of our own selves.
To understand the significance of this Hadith, let us turn to the Quran, where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) repeatedly emphasizes the importance of knowledge and warns against ignorance. In Surah Al-Zumar (39:9), Allah says,
Are those who know equal to those who do not know?
This verse highlights the distinction between those who possess knowledge and those who remain ignorant. It emphasizes the superiority of knowledge and the detrimental effects of ignorance.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Hujurat (49:6), Allah commands the believers to verify information before accepting it, saying,
O you who have believed, if there comes to you a disobedient one with information, investigate, lest you harm a people out of ignorance and become, over what you have done, regretful.
This verse emphasizes the importance of seeking knowledge and verifying information to avoid acting based on ignorance, which can lead to harm and regret.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) draws our attention to the fact that ignorance is a form of poverty that surpasses material poverty. It highlights the detrimental effects of ignorance on an individual's spiritual, intellectual, and social well-being. Ignorance can lead to misunderstandings, misinterpretations, and misguided actions, which can have severe consequences.
For instance, ignorance of religious teachings can lead to the adoption of incorrect beliefs and practices, causing divisions and conflicts within the Muslim community. Ignorance of worldly matters can hinder progress and development, preventing individuals from making informed decisions and contributing positively to society. Ignorance of oneself can lead to a lack of self-awareness and self-improvement, hindering personal growth and fulfillment.
Conversely, seeking knowledge and acquiring understanding can alleviate the poverty of ignorance. The Quran encourages Muslims to seek knowledge in various fields, including religious sciences, natural sciences, and social sciences. The pursuit of knowledge is not limited to a specific domain but encompasses all aspects of life.
By seeking knowledge, Muslims can gain a deeper understanding of their faith, enabling them to practice Islam correctly and promote unity within the community. Knowledge empowers individuals to make informed decisions, contribute to the betterment of society, and address the challenges of the modern world. Moreover, knowledge allows individuals to recognize their strengths and weaknesses, enabling personal growth and self-improvement.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ),
There is no poverty like ignorance,
serves as a reminder to Muslims of the importance of seeking knowledge and understanding. It highlights the detrimental effects of ignorance on individuals and society, urging us to strive for knowledge in all aspects of life. By seeking knowledge, we can overcome the poverty of ignorance and lead fulfilling lives guided by wisdom and understanding. May Allah (تَبَارَكَ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom and motivation to seek knowledge and protect us from the poverty of ignorance.
