Verily you are [living] in an age when those who speak about the truth are few, and tongues are weary of uttering the truth, and those who stick to the truth are humiliated. The people of this time are engaged in disobedience and make peace with each other upon treachery [and deceit]. Their youths are violent [and wicked] while their elders are sinful. Their scholars are hypocrites and their speakers are deviants. Their young do not respect the elderly and their rich do not support the poor.

(Ghurar al-Hikam: Important Events)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the challenging circumstances that the Muslim Ummah will face in a particular time period. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) describes this era as one where the truth is scarce, and those who speak the truth are few in number. The tongues of people become weary of uttering the truth due to the prevailing atmosphere of falsehood and deception. Furthermore, those who adhere to the truth are humiliated and marginalized.
The people of this time are characterized by their engagement in disobedience and their willingness to make peace with each other upon treachery and deceit. Their youths are described as violent and wicked, while their elders are sinful. The scholars among them are hypocrites, pretending to possess knowledge and guidance while concealing their true intentions. The speakers and preachers are deviants, spreading misleading and corrupt ideologies. In this society, the young do not respect the elderly, and the rich do not support the poor.
To understand the beautiful message of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) repeatedly emphasizes the importance of truthfulness and the consequences of deviating from it. In Surah Al-Ma'idah, verse 8, Allah says,
O you who have believed, be persistently standing firm for Allah, witnesses in justice, and do not let the hatred of a people prevent you from being just. Be just; that is nearer to righteousness. And fear Allah; indeed, Allah is Acquainted with what you do.
This verse reminds us of the duty to stand firm for the truth, even in the face of opposition or hatred. It emphasizes the importance of justice and fairness, regardless of the circumstances. In the time described by Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), the scarcity of truth and the prevalence of deceit make it even more crucial for Muslims to hold onto the principles of justice and truthfulness.
Another relevant verse is found in Surah Al-An'am, verse 116, where Allah says,
And if you obey most of those upon the earth, they will mislead you from the way of Allah. They follow not except assumption, and they are not but falsifying.
This verse serves as a warning against blindly following the majority, especially when they deviate from the path of truth. It reminds us that the majority may often be misguided and that we should not be swayed by popular opinion if it contradicts the teachings of Islam. In the time described by Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), the prevalence of falsehood and the scarcity of truth make it even more crucial for Muslims to be discerning and steadfast in their adherence to the principles of Islam.
The consequences of living in such a time are far-reaching. The scarcity of truth and the prevalence of deceit lead to a society where corruption and immorality become the norm. The youth, who are meant to be the future leaders and torchbearers of the Ummah, become violent and wicked. The elders, who should be guiding and setting a moral example, engage in sinful behavior. The scholars, who are supposed to be the custodians of knowledge and guidance, become hypocrites, using their position for personal gain rather than sincerely seeking the truth. The speakers and preachers, who should be spreading the message of Islam, deviate from the true teachings and misguide the people.
In such a society, the bonds of respect and support between different segments of the community break down. The young no longer show reverence to the elderly, disregarding their wisdom and experience. The rich fail to fulfill their duty of supporting the poor and marginalized, further exacerbating the inequalities within society.
Reflecting on this Hadith, we are reminded of the importance of seeking knowledge and understanding the true teachings of Islam. We must strive to be among the few who speak the truth, even when it is difficult or unpopular. We should not allow ourselves to be swayed by the prevailing atmosphere of falsehood and deception. Instead, we should hold firmly to the principles of justice, truthfulness, and righteousness, as emphasized in the Quran.
Furthermore, this Hadith serves as a call to action for Muslims to be vigilant and discerning in their choices. We should not blindly follow the majority or be influenced by the prevailing trends of society if they contradict the teachings of Islam. Instead, we should seek guidance from the Quran and the authentic teachings of Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) and his Ahl al-Bayt (عَلَيْهِمُ ٱلسَّلَامُ).
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a profound reminder of the challenges that the Muslim Ummah may face in certain times. It calls upon us to hold firmly to the principles of truth, justice, and righteousness, even when they are scarce. It urges us to be discerning and steadfast in our adherence to the teachings of Islam, seeking guidance from the Quran and the Ahl al-Bayt (عَلَيْهِمُ ٱلسَّلَامُ). May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the strength and wisdom to navigate through such challenging times and remain steadfast on the path of truth.
