سَبَبُ فَسادِ الدّينِ اَلْهَوى۔
The cause of corruption of faith is vain desire.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Vain Desire)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
سَبَبُ فَسادِ الدّينِ اَلْهَوى۔
This can be translated as,
The cause of corruption of faith is vain desire.
In this beautiful saying, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the root cause of the deterioration of one's faith, which is the indulgence in baseless and sinful desires.
To understand the significance of this Hadith, let us delve into the meanings of the key words. (fasad) "فَسادِ" refers to corruption, decay, or deterioration. It implies a state of moral decay or spiritual decline. (deen) "الدِّينِ" refers to faith, religion, or way of life. It encompasses the beliefs, practices, and values that guide a person's relationship with Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). Lastly, (al-hawa) "الْهَوَى" refers to vain desires, whims, or baseless inclinations that are contrary to the guidance of Allah and His Messenger (ﷺ).
The Quran provides numerous verses that support the exegesis of this Hadith. For instance, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Jathiya (45:23),
Have you seen he who has taken as his god his [own] desire (hawa)? Then would you be responsible for him?
This verse highlights the danger of making one's desires the object of worship, instead of submitting to the will of Allah. It warns against following one's vain desires, as it leads to spiritual ruin and accountability before Allah.
In Surah Al-Qasas (28:50), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states,
But if they do not respond to you - then know that they only follow their [own] desires (hawa). And who is more astray than one who follows his desire without guidance from Allah?
This verse emphasizes the misguided nature of those who prioritize their own whims over the guidance of Allah. It highlights the importance of seeking divine guidance and adhering to it, rather than being driven solely by personal desires.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement serves as a powerful reminder for Muslims to be cautious of the influence of vain desires on their faith. When individuals prioritize their own whims and desires over the teachings of Islam, it leads to a corruption of their faith. This corruption can manifest in various ways, such as neglecting religious obligations, engaging in sinful behavior, or distorting the true essence of Islam.
Indulging in vain desires can have severe consequences. It distances individuals from the path of righteousness and weakens their connection with Allah. It blinds them to the truth and prevents them from attaining spiritual growth. Moreover, it can lead to the erosion of moral values within society, as people prioritize their personal desires over the greater good.
To safeguard ourselves from the corruption of faith caused by vain desires, we must strive to align our desires with the teachings of Islam. This requires self-discipline, self-control, and a sincere commitment to seeking Allah's pleasure. We should constantly evaluate our intentions and actions, ensuring that they are in accordance with the principles of the Quran and the Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ).
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) enlightening saying serves as a timeless reminder for Muslims to be vigilant against the allure of vain desires. By recognizing the destructive nature of indulging in baseless inclinations, we can strive towards purifying our hearts, strengthening our faith, and attaining spiritual growth. May Allah protect us from the corruption of faith and grant us the strength to resist the temptations of vain desires.
