إنَّما زَهَّدَ النّاسُ في طَلَبِ العِلْمِ كَثْرَةُ ما يَرَوْنَ مِنْ قِلَّةِ مَنْ عَمِلَ بِما عَلِمَ۔
Indeed the only thing that has made people disinclined to seeking knowledge is the frequency with which they observe that only a few people act upon what they know.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Knowledge)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
In this profound hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), he highlights a crucial aspect of seeking knowledge. The Imam (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states that people have become disinclined to seek knowledge due to the observation that only a few individuals actually act upon the knowledge they possess.
Let us delve deeper into the words used in this hadith to gain a comprehensive understanding. The word (zahhada) "زَهَّدَ" means to become disinclined or detached from something. In this context, it refers to the lack of interest or motivation to seek knowledge. The word (nas) "نَّاسُ" refers to people in general, encompassing all individuals. (talab al-'ilm) "طَلَبِ العِلْمِ" means the pursuit or seeking of knowledge.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights that the reason behind this disinclination is the observation that only a few individuals act upon the knowledge they possess. This observation creates a sense of disillusionment and discouragement among the masses, leading them to question the value and significance of seeking knowledge.
To understand the significance of seeking knowledge and the importance of acting upon it, we turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) emphasizes the importance of knowledge in numerous verses. In Surah Al-Zumar (39:9), Allah says,
Are those who know equal to those who do not know?
This verse highlights the distinction between those who possess knowledge and those who do not. It emphasizes that knowledge is a valuable asset that sets individuals apart.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Mujadila (58:11), Allah says,
Allah will raise those who have believed among you and those who were given knowledge, by degrees.
This verse emphasizes that knowledge is a means of elevation and honor in the sight of Allah. It is not merely the acquisition of information but also the application of that knowledge in one's actions that leads to spiritual growth and advancement.
The consequences of neglecting the application of knowledge are evident in various aspects of life. When individuals possess knowledge but fail to act upon it, they become stagnant and fail to contribute positively to society. This stagnation hinders progress and prevents the development of a just and prosperous community.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights this issue to motivate Muslims to not only seek knowledge but also to act upon it. He encourages us to be among the few who utilize their knowledge for the betterment of themselves and society as a whole. By doing so, we fulfill our duty as Muslims and contribute to the establishment of a just and righteous society.
Reflecting upon this hadith, we must ask ourselves: Are we among those who seek knowledge but fail to act upon it? Or are we among those who strive to implement the knowledge we acquire in our daily lives? It is essential to remember that knowledge without action is incomplete and ineffective. We must strive to be individuals who not only seek knowledge but also embody it in our actions, following the example of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) and his noble family.
May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the motivation and determination to seek knowledge and the wisdom to apply it in our lives. May we be among those who act upon what they know, contributing to the betterment of ourselves and society. Ameen.
