كَفى بِالقُرْآنِ داعِياً۔
The Qur’an is sufficient as a caller [towards the right path].
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Qur’an)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "كَفى بِالقُرْآنِ داعِياً۔" This Hadith emphasizes the sufficiency of the Qur'an as a caller towards the right path. Let us delve into the meaning of this statement and explore its implications in light of the Quranic teachings.
The word (kafa) "كَفَى" in Arabic means "to be sufficient" or "to be enough." It signifies that the Qur'an alone is enough to guide humanity towards the truth and righteousness. It highlights the comprehensive nature of the Qur'an, encompassing all aspects of human life and providing guidance for every situation.
The word (da'iyan) "داعِياً" comes from the root word (da'a) "دَعَا", which means "to call" or "to invite." In this context, it refers to the Qur'an as a caller towards the right path. The Qur'an invites and calls upon people to follow its teachings, guiding them towards righteousness, justice, and the worship of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).
The Qur'an itself affirms its ability to guide humanity towards the truth. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Isra (17:9),
Indeed, this Qur'an guides to that which is most suitable and gives good tidings to the believers who do righteous deeds that they will have a great reward.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:185), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) describes the Qur'an as a source of guidance for mankind, stating,
The month of Ramadan is that in which the Qur'an was revealed as guidance for the people.
The sufficiency of the Qur'an as a caller towards the right path implies that it contains all the necessary guidance for Muslims to lead a righteous life. It encompasses principles of faith, morality, social justice, and personal conduct. The Qur'an provides clear instructions on how to worship Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and live in harmony with others.
For example, in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:83), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
And [recall] when We took the covenant from the Children of Israel, [enjoining upon them], 'Do not worship except Allah; and to parents do good and to relatives, orphans, and the needy. And speak to people good [words] and establish prayer and give zakah.' Then you turned away, except a few of you, and you were refusing.
This verse highlights the importance of monotheism, kindness towards parents and relatives, caring for the vulnerable, speaking with kindness, establishing prayer, and giving charity. These teachings are just a glimpse of the comprehensive guidance provided by the Qur'an.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement reminds us that the Qur'an is not merely a book to be recited or revered, but a guide to be studied, understood, and implemented in our daily lives. It calls upon Muslims to seek knowledge from the Qur'an and apply its teachings in all aspects of life.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) himself was a paragon of knowledge and wisdom, deeply rooted in the teachings of the Qur'an. His profound understanding of the Qur'an allowed him to guide the Muslim community during his caliphate and beyond. He exemplified the teachings of the Qur'an through his just leadership, compassion, and unwavering devotion to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the sufficiency of the Qur'an as a caller towards the right path. It highlights the comprehensive nature of the Qur'an, encompassing all aspects of human life and providing guidance for every situation. Muslims are encouraged to seek knowledge from the Qur'an and apply its teachings in their lives, following the example of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) and the righteous predecessors. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to understand and implement the teachings of the Qur'an in our lives.
