Do not confront your enemy while he is charging towards you, for indeed his charge will aid him to overcome you and do not confront him when he is fleeing away from you, for indeed his flight is sufficient for you in dealing with him.

(Ghurar al-Hikam: Enmity And The Enemy)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) advises us on the appropriate approach to dealing with our enemies. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his wisdom and deep understanding of Islam, instructs us not to confront our enemy when they are charging towards us. He warns us that engaging in battle with an enemy who is actively attacking us will only aid them in overcoming us. This teaches us the importance of strategic thinking and not rushing into confrontations that may not be in our best interest.

To further understand the wisdom behind this advice, let us turn to the Quran for guidance. In Surah Al-Anfal, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says, (Quran 8:47)

And do not be like those who came forth from their homes insolently and to be seen by people and avert them from the way of Allah.

This verse highlights the importance of not engaging in battles for the sake of show or personal pride. It reminds us to be cautious and deliberate in our actions, especially when facing our enemies.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) further advises us not to confront our enemy when they are fleeing away from us. He explains that their flight alone is sufficient for us in dealing with them. This teaches us the importance of patience and restraint in dealing with our enemies. Instead of pursuing them in their retreat, we should allow their own actions to be their downfall.

The Quran also emphasizes the importance of patience and restraint in Surah Al-Baqarah, where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says, (Quran 8:61)

And if they incline to peace, then incline to it [also] and rely upon Allah. Indeed, it is He who is the Hearing, the Knowing.

This verse encourages us to seek peace and reconciliation whenever possible, rather than pursuing our enemies in their retreat.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) advice in this Hadith is rooted in wisdom and strategic thinking. By not confronting our enemy when they are charging towards us, we avoid falling into their trap and giving them an advantage. Similarly, by not pursuing them when they are fleeing, we allow their own actions to be their downfall. This approach ensures that we maintain control over the situation and do not become victims of our own haste or emotions.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us the importance of strategic thinking and patience in dealing with our enemies. It reminds us to be cautious and deliberate in our actions, avoiding confrontations that may not be in our best interest. By following this advice, we can navigate challenging situations with wisdom and ensure the best possible outcome. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the understanding to apply this wisdom in our lives and protect us from the harm of our enemies.
