مُلازَمَةُ الوَقارِ تُؤْمِنُ دَناءَةَ الطَّيْشِ۔
Espousing solemnity protects one from the lowliness of impetuousness.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Calmness and Solemnity)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
مُلازَمَةُ الوَقارِ تُؤْمِنُ دَناءَةَ الطَّيْشِ۔
This can be translated as,
Espousing solemnity protects one from the lowliness of impetuousness.
To understand the profound wisdom in this statement, let us delve into the meanings of the key words. "مُلازَمَةُ" refers to the act of adhering to or maintaining something consistently. In this context, it signifies the continuous practice of "الوَقارِ," which means dignity, honor, and reverence. "دَناءَةَ" refers to the state of being lowly, base, or ignoble. And "الطَّيْشِ" refers to impetuousness, recklessness, and thoughtlessness.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the importance of embracing solemnity and dignity in our actions, speech, and demeanor. By consistently embodying these qualities, we are shielded from the negative consequences of impetuousness and recklessness. Let us explore this further in the light of the Quran.
Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) emphasizes the significance of dignity and restraint in Surah Al-Hujurat (49:11), where He says,
O you who have believed, let not a people ridicule [another] people; perhaps they may be better than them; nor let women ridicule [other] women; perhaps they may be better than them. And do not insult one another and do not call each other by [offensive] nicknames. Wretched is the name of disobedience after [one's] faith. And whoever does not repent - then it is those who are the wrongdoers.
This verse teaches us to avoid belittling or mocking others, as it undermines their dignity and reflects a lack of reverence. By maintaining our own dignity and treating others with respect, we protect ourselves from the lowliness of impetuous behavior.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Isra (17:37), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) advises us,
And do not walk upon the earth exultantly. Indeed, you will never tear the earth [apart], and you will never reach the mountains in height.
This verse reminds us to be humble and not to display arrogance or haughtiness. By embodying humility and dignity, we distance ourselves from the impetuousness that arises from an inflated ego.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) amazing Hadith serves as a reminder for Muslims to reflect upon their actions and cultivate a sense of solemnity and dignity in all aspects of life. When we embrace these qualities, we are less likely to act impulsively, make hasty decisions, or engage in reckless behavior that may have negative consequences.
For example, in our interactions with others, maintaining dignity and reverence prevents us from engaging in gossip, backbiting, or spreading rumors. Instead, we choose to speak with wisdom, kindness, and respect, fostering a harmonious and respectful environment.
In matters of faith, espousing solemnity helps us avoid falling into the trap of extremism or adopting misguided beliefs. We approach religious matters with a balanced and thoughtful mindset, seeking knowledge from authentic sources and consulting with scholars to ensure our actions are guided by wisdom and understanding.
Furthermore, in our personal lives, embracing solemnity protects us from the allure of instant gratification and impulsive decision-making. We take the time to reflect, consider the consequences of our actions, and make choices that align with our values and principles.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a profound reminder for Muslims to embody solemnity and dignity in all aspects of life. By consistently practicing these qualities, we shield ourselves from the lowliness of impetuousness and its negative consequences. Let us strive to emulate the noble example set by Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) and seek guidance from the Quran to lead a life of wisdom, reverence, and balance. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the strength and guidance to do so.
