Beware of making your tongue a medium for slandering your brothers, or of saying that which will become proof against you and a reason for harming you.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Tongue)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a profound reminder for all Muslims to be cautious of the words they utter and the potential harm they can cause. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his wisdom and knowledge, advises us to be mindful of the consequences of our speech.
Let us delve into the important words of this Hadith. The word (markabaka) "مَرْكَبَكَ" refers to one's tongue, which is likened to a vehicle or a means of communication. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) warns us against using our tongues as a medium for slandering or speaking ill of our fellow Muslim brothers and sisters. This emphasizes the importance of maintaining unity and harmony within the Muslim community.
The phrase (taj'al) "تَجْعَلَ" signifies the act of making or turning something into a particular state or condition. In this context, it implies the deliberate choice to use one's tongue in a negative manner. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) advises us to refrain from such actions, as they can lead to division and animosity among Muslims.
Furthermore, the Imam (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) cautions against saying things that may become proof against us. This means that our own words can be used as evidence to hold us accountable for our actions. We should be mindful of the consequences of our speech, as it can have a lasting impact on our relationships and our own spiritual well-being.
To support this exegesis, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Hujurat (49:11),
O you who have believed, let not a people ridicule [another] people; perhaps they may be better than them; nor let women ridicule [other] women; perhaps they may be better than them. And do not insult one another and do not call each other by [offensive] nicknames. Wretched is the name of disobedience after [one's] faith. And whoever does not repent - then it is those who are the wrongdoers.
This ayah emphasizes the importance of refraining from insulting or ridiculing others, as it can lead to the degradation of one's own faith. It highlights the need for respect and kindness towards fellow Muslims, regardless of their differences. Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) advice aligns perfectly with this Quranic injunction, urging us to be cautious of the harm our words can cause.
Additionally, in Surah Al-Hujurat (49:12), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states,
O you who have believed, avoid much [negative] assumption. Indeed, some assumption is sin. And do not spy or backbite each other. Would one of you like to eat the flesh of his brother when dead? You would detest it. And fear Allah; indeed, Allah is Accepting of repentance and Merciful.
This verse further emphasizes the importance of refraining from backbiting or speaking ill of others. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) compares such behavior to consuming the flesh of a dead brother, highlighting the repulsiveness and immorality of such actions. Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) advice aligns with this Quranic teaching, urging us to be cautious of the harm our words can cause and the sins they can lead to.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a powerful reminder for all Muslims to be mindful of the words they speak. It highlights the importance of unity, respect, and kindness within the Muslim community. By refraining from slandering, speaking ill, or saying things that may harm others, we can foster a sense of harmony and strengthen our relationships. Let us strive to follow the teachings of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) and the guidance of the Quran in our daily lives, seeking to please Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and earn His mercy. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom and strength to control our tongues and speak words that bring about goodness and benefit to ourselves and others.
