(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Heart)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

The heart of a fool is in his mouth and the tongue of the intelligent one is in his heart.

This thought-provoking Hadith highlights the stark contrast between the behavior and speech of a foolish person and a wise person.

Let us delve into the meanings of the key words in this hadith. The word (qalb) "قَلْبُ" refers to the heart, which is not merely the physical organ, but also the seat of emotions, intellect, and spirituality. The word (ahmaq) "أحْمَقِ" denotes a fool, someone lacking wisdom and understanding. On the other hand, the word (aql) "عاقِلِ" refers to an intelligent person, someone possessing wisdom and rationality.

To understand the deeper significance of this hadith, we turn to the Quran, where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) repeatedly emphasizes the importance of using one's intellect and speaking wisely. In Surah Al-A'raf, verse 179, Allah says,

And certainly, We have created for Hell many of the jinn and mankind. They have hearts with which they do not understand, they have eyes with which they do not see, and they have ears with which they do not hear. They are like cattle; rather, they are more astray. It is they who are the heedless.

This verse highlights the consequences of having a heart that lacks understanding. Such individuals are unable to comprehend the truth, leading them astray and causing them to behave like animals. Their hearts are disconnected from their intellect, resulting in foolish actions and speech.

Conversely, the Quran also emphasizes the importance of using one's intellect and speaking wisely. In Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 197, Allah says,

And take provisions, but indeed, the best provision is Taqwa (piety). So fear Me, O you of understanding.

This verse encourages believers to use their intellect and fear Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) in all their actions. It emphasizes that true understanding lies in having piety and consciousness of Allah. This understanding is reflected in one's speech, as the tongue of the intelligent person is guided by wisdom and righteousness.

Now, let us reflect on the wise message of Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) hadith. The heart of a fool is in his mouth, meaning that foolish individuals speak without thinking, lacking wisdom and understanding. They are quick to utter words that may be harmful, hurtful, or devoid of any substance. Their hearts are disconnected from their intellect, leading to the manifestation of foolishness in their speech.

On the other hand, the tongue of the intelligent person is in his heart, indicating that wise individuals carefully choose their words, considering their impact and consequences. They speak with wisdom, knowledge, and understanding, as their hearts are aligned with their intellect. Their speech is guided by righteousness, compassion, and the pursuit of truth.

This hadith serves as a reminder for Muslims to strive for wisdom and intelligence in their speech. It encourages us to reflect on the power of our words and the importance of aligning our hearts with our intellect. By doing so, we can avoid the pitfalls of foolishness and instead become beacons of wisdom and guidance for others.

Let us therefore strive to cultivate a heart that is connected to our intellect, allowing our tongues to be guided by wisdom, righteousness, and the remembrance of Allah. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to speak with wisdom and understanding, and protect us from the pitfalls of foolishness. Ameen.
