Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states:

One who submits to his [evil] habits does not attain lofty stations.

This Hadith emphasizes the importance of self-discipline and the avoidance of harmful habits in order to achieve spiritual elevation and reach higher levels of righteousness.

Let us delve into the key words of this Hadith to gain a deeper understanding. The word (mudrik) "مُدْرِكِ" refers to the attainment or realization of something. It signifies reaching a certain level or station. The term (ad-darajat) "الدَرَّجاتِ" refers to the lofty stations or ranks that one can attain in their spiritual journey.

To further comprehend the significance of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states in Surah Al-A'raf (7:179):

And We have certainly created for Hell many of the jinn and mankind. They have hearts with which they do not understand, they have eyes with which they do not see, and they have ears with which they do not hear. Those are like livestock; rather, they are more astray. It is they who are the heedless.

This verse highlights the consequences of following one's desires and succumbing to harmful habits. Such individuals become spiritually blind and deaf, unable to comprehend the truth and guidance from Allah. They are likened to livestock, lacking the intellect and awareness necessary to attain higher spiritual stations.

Additionally, in Surah Al-Qasas (28:50), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) warns:

But if they do not respond to you - then know that they only follow their [own] desires. And who is more astray than one who follows his desire without guidance from Allah? Indeed, Allah does not guide the wrongdoing people.

This verse emphasizes the importance of seeking guidance from Allah and not blindly following one's desires. Those who prioritize their own whims and desires over the commandments of Allah are led astray and are unable to attain the lofty stations of righteousness.

Reflecting on the Hadith, we understand that submitting to our evil habits prevents us from reaching higher levels of spirituality and righteousness. These habits can include various vices such as lying, backbiting, arrogance, greed, and other destructive behaviors. By indulging in these habits, we distance ourselves from the path of guidance and hinder our spiritual growth.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his immense knowledge and wisdom, reminds us of the importance of self-discipline and self-control. He encourages us to break free from the chains of our harmful habits and strive for spiritual elevation. By resisting our evil inclinations and replacing them with virtuous actions, we can purify our souls and ascend to higher levels of righteousness.

Let us reflect upon our own lives and identify any harmful habits that hinder our spiritual progress. By seeking forgiveness from Allah and striving to overcome these habits, we can embark on a journey towards attaining the lofty stations of righteousness. May Allah (تَبَارَكَ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the strength and guidance to overcome our evil habits and elevate our souls.
