مَنْ تَفَكَّرَ في ذاتِ اللّهِ تَزَنْدَقَ۔
One who reflects on the essence of Allah apostatizes.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Thinking And The Thinker)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure and noble Ahl al-Bayt, and his righteous companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
One who reflects on the essence of Allah apostatizes.
This Hadith contains important words that require our attention and understanding.
The word (tafakkara) "تَفَكَّرَ" in Arabic means to deeply ponder, contemplate, or reflect upon something. It implies a profound and intellectual engagement with the subject matter. In this Hadith, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) is emphasizing the significance of reflecting upon the essence of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).
The word (dhāt) "ذاتِ" refers to the essence or being of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). It encompasses the divine attributes and qualities that are unique to Allah alone. Reflecting on the essence of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) means contemplating His infinite knowledge, power, mercy, and wisdom.
Now, let us turn to the Quran to find support for the exegesis of this Hadith. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Hashr (59:22-24):
He is Allah, other than whom there is no deity, Knower of the unseen and the witnessed. He is the Most Merciful, the Most Compassionate. He is Allah, other than whom there is no deity, the Sovereign, the Pure, the Perfection, the Bestower of Faith, the Overseer, the Exalted in Might, the Compeller, the Superior. Exalted is Allah above whatever they associate with Him.
These verses highlight the unique attributes of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ), emphasizing His knowledge of the seen and unseen, His mercy, His sovereignty, and His perfection. Reflecting on these attributes leads us to a deeper understanding of His essence and strengthens our faith.
Another verse that supports the exegesis of this Hadith is found in Surah Al-Imran (3:190):
Indeed, in the creation of the heavens and the earth and the alternation of the night and the day are signs for those of understanding.
This verse encourages us to reflect upon the signs of Allah's creation in order to gain a deeper understanding of His essence. By contemplating the intricate design of the universe, the balance of nature, and the wonders of life, we can develop a greater appreciation for the greatness and wisdom of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).
Now, let us delve into the profound explanation of this Hadith. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) is warning us about the dangers of delving too deeply into the essence of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) without the necessary knowledge and understanding. It is not meant to discourage intellectual pursuits or reflection, but rather to caution against engaging in theological speculations that may lead to disbelief or deviation from the true path of Islam.
Reflecting on the essence of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) requires a deep level of knowledge and understanding of the Quran and the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) and his Ahl al-Bayt. It is through the guidance of the Quran and the teachings of the Prophet (ﷺ) and his Ahl al-Bayt that we can gain a proper understanding of Allah's essence and attributes.
Engaging in theological debates or speculations without the necessary knowledge and understanding can lead to confusion, doubts, and even apostasy. It is important to approach the study of Allah's essence with humility, seeking guidance from the Quran and the teachings of the Prophet (ﷺ) and his Ahl al-Bayt.
Reflecting on the essence of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) should be done with the intention of increasing our faith, deepening our connection with Allah, and seeking guidance in our lives. It should not be approached as a means of challenging or questioning the fundamental beliefs of Islam.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a reminder for Muslims to approach the reflection on the essence of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) with caution and humility. It emphasizes the importance of seeking knowledge and guidance from the Quran and the teachings of the Prophet (ﷺ) and his Ahl al-Bayt. By doing so, we can deepen our understanding of Allah's essence and strengthen our faith in Him. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) guide us all on the path of knowledge and righteousness.
