(Ghurar al-Hikam: Obedience And Compliance)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the significance of obedience to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and the benefits it brings to those who possess wisdom and understanding. Let us delve into the deeper meaning of this Hadith in light of the Quran.

The word (ta'ah) "طاعة" in Arabic refers to obedience, submission, and compliance. It is derived from the root word (ata) "عَطَا", which means to give or grant. In this context, it signifies the act of obeying and following the commands of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). The term (ghaneemah) "غنيمة" means advantage, benefit, or gain. It is derived from the root word (ghanima) "غَنِمَ", which refers to the spoils of war or something acquired through effort.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states that Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) has made obedience a source of advantage for the sagacious, the wise and discerning individuals, when the incapable ones fall short. This implies that those who possess wisdom and understanding recognize the value and rewards of obedience to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ), even when others may fail to fulfill their obligations.

The Quran provides numerous verses that emphasize the importance of obedience to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and the benefits it brings. Allah says in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:187):

It has been made lawful for you to approach your wives during the nights of the fast. They are a garment for you and you are a garment for them. Allah knew that you were being dishonest to yourselves, so He turned to you in mercy and pardoned you. So now, you may approach them and seek what Allah has ordained for you. Eat and drink until the white thread of dawn becomes distinct to you from the black thread of night. Then complete the fast until nightfall. And do not approach them while you are in retreat at the mosques. These are the limits set by Allah, so do not approach them. Thus does Allah make clear His signs to the people that they may become righteous.

This verse highlights the importance of obeying the limits set by Allah during the month of Ramadan. It shows that obedience to Allah's commands brings about mercy, forgiveness, and righteousness. The sagacious individuals recognize the advantage and benefit of adhering to these limits, even when others may falter or neglect them.

Another verse that supports the concept of obedience as an advantage is found in Surah Al-Imran (3:132):

And obey Allah and the Messenger that you may obtain mercy.

This verse emphasizes the connection between obedience to Allah and His Messenger () and the attainment of mercy from Allah. The sagacious individuals understand that obedience to Allah and His Messenger is a means to receive Allah's mercy and blessings.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us that obedience to Allah is not only a duty but also a source of advantage and benefit for those who possess wisdom and understanding. It is through obedience that we attain closeness to Allah, receive His mercy, and experience the blessings and rewards in this world and the hereafter. The sagacious individuals recognize the significance of obedience, even when others may fall short, and strive to fulfill their obligations to Allah with sincerity and devotion.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the importance of obedience to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and the advantages it brings to those who possess wisdom and understanding. Through obedience, we attain closeness to Allah, receive His mercy, and experience the blessings and rewards in this world and the hereafter. May Allah grant us the wisdom and strength to be obedient servants and may He bless us with His mercy and guidance.
