لِسانُ الْعِلْمِ الصِّدْقُ۔
The language of knowledge is truthfulness.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Knowledge)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his righteous companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
The language of knowledge is truthfulness.
This thought-provoking Hadith emphasizes the importance of truthfulness in acquiring and conveying knowledge. Let us delve deeper into the meanings of the key words in this Hadith.
The word "lisan" in Arabic refers to the tongue or language. It symbolizes the means through which knowledge is expressed and communicated. It is through our words that we convey information, ideas, and insights. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the significance of using this language of knowledge, which is characterized by truthfulness.
The word "ilm" in Arabic refers to knowledge. It encompasses all forms of knowledge, including religious, scientific, and practical knowledge. It is the understanding and awareness of facts and principles that enables individuals to navigate through life and make informed decisions. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes that the language of knowledge must be rooted in truthfulness.
To further understand the importance of truthfulness in knowledge, let us turn to the Quran. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Zumar (39:18-19),
Who listen to speech and follow the best of it. Those are the ones Allah has guided, and those are people of understanding. Then, is one who has deserved the decree of punishment [to be guided]? Then, can you save one who is in the Fire?
These verses highlight the significance of listening to truthful speech and following the best of it. It is through truthfulness that Allah guides His servants and grants them understanding.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Hujurat (49:6), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
O you who have believed, if there comes to you a disobedient one with information, investigate, lest you harm a people out of ignorance and become, over what you have done, regretful.
This verse emphasizes the importance of verifying information before accepting and spreading it. It encourages Muslims to seek the truth and avoid spreading falsehood or misinformation.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement reminds us that knowledge should not be distorted or manipulated for personal gain or ulterior motives. It should be conveyed with sincerity and honesty. When knowledge is communicated truthfully, it has the power to enlighten, guide, and benefit others. Conversely, when knowledge is tainted with falsehood or deceit, it can lead to confusion, division, and harm.
The language of knowledge being rooted in truthfulness has profound implications for both the acquisition and dissemination of knowledge. When seeking knowledge, it is essential to approach it with sincerity and a genuine desire for truth. This requires humility, open-mindedness, and a willingness to question preconceived notions. By adopting a truthful approach, we can ensure that our knowledge is based on sound foundations and accurate information.
Similarly, when conveying knowledge to others, it is crucial to prioritize truthfulness. This means presenting information accurately, without distortion or bias. It also entails acknowledging our limitations and being honest when we do not have the answers. By upholding truthfulness in our communication, we can foster trust, credibility, and intellectual growth within our communities.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement serves as a reminder for Muslims to uphold the values of truthfulness in their pursuit and dissemination of knowledge. It encourages us to be seekers and conveyors of truth, for it is through truth that we can attain guidance, understanding, and righteousness. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to embody the language of knowledge, rooted in truthfulness, and may He bless us with beneficial knowledge that brings us closer to Him.
