مَنِ اعْتَصَمَ بِاللّهِ لَمْ يَضُرَّهُ شَيْطانٌ۔
One who seeks protection from Allah is not harmed by Satan.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Seeking Protection From Allah)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
مَنِ اعْتَصَمَ بِاللّهِ لَمْ يَضُرَّهُ شَيْطانٌ۔
This can be translated as,
One who seeks protection from Allah is not harmed by Satan.
Let us delve into the connotation of this Hadith in light of the Quran.
The word (i'tasama) "اعْتَصَمَ" in this Hadith means to seek protection, refuge, or to hold firmly onto something for safety. It implies seeking the protection of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) from the harm and influence of Satan. This act of seeking refuge in Allah is a powerful means of safeguarding oneself from the whispers and temptations of Satan.
Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) emphasizes the importance of seeking His protection in the Quran. In Surah Al-Mu'minun (23:97-98), Allah says,
And say, 'My Lord, I seek refuge in You from the incitements of the devils. And I seek refuge in You, my Lord, lest they be present with me.'
This shows that seeking refuge in Allah is a recommended practice for all Muslims to protect themselves from the evil whispers and influences of Satan.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-A'raf (7:200), Allah instructs the believers to seek refuge in Him by saying,
And if an evil suggestion comes to you from Satan, then seek refuge in Allah. Indeed, He is Hearing and Knowing.
This verse highlights the importance of seeking Allah's protection when faced with the whispers and temptations of Satan.
The consequences of seeking refuge in Allah are profound. When a person seeks protection from Allah, they are acknowledging their dependence on Him and their recognition of His power and ability to protect them. By doing so, they are strengthening their connection with Allah and demonstrating their trust in Him.
Seeking refuge in Allah also serves as a shield against the influence of Satan. Satan's primary goal is to lead humans astray and distance them from the path of righteousness. However, when a person seeks protection from Allah, they are fortifying themselves against Satan's tricks and manipulations. They become more aware of Satan's tactics and are less likely to be swayed by his whispers.
Moreover, seeking refuge in Allah is not a one-time act, but rather a continuous practice. It is a constant reminder of our vulnerability as human beings and our need for Allah's guidance and protection. By consistently seeking refuge in Allah, we are actively seeking His help and support in navigating the challenges and trials of life.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us of the importance of seeking protection from Allah to safeguard ourselves from the harm and influence of Satan. This act of seeking refuge in Allah is supported by various Quranic verses that emphasize its significance. By seeking Allah's protection, we strengthen our connection with Him, shield ourselves from Satan's whispers, and demonstrate our trust in Allah's ability to protect us. May Allah grant us the wisdom and strength to seek His refuge and protect us from the evil of Satan.
