(Ghurar al-Hikam: Sincere Advice)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, the Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "النَّصِيحَةُ تُثْمِرُ الْوُدَّ۔" This can be translated as,
Sincere advice reaps affection.
Let us delve into the significance of this Hadith in light of the Quran.
The word (naseehah) "نَّصِيحَةُ" in this Hadith refers to sincere advice or counsel given with the intention of benefiting and guiding others. It is an act of selflessness and concern for the well-being of others. The word (tuthmiru) "تُثْمِرُ" means to bear fruit or yield results, while (al-wudda) "الْوُدَّ" refers to affection, love, and friendship.
The Quran emphasizes the importance of sincere advice and its positive impact on relationships. In Surah Al-Asr, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says, (Quran 103:1-3)
By time, indeed, mankind is in loss, except for those who have believed and done righteous deeds and advised each other to truth and advised each other to patience.
This verse highlights the significance of advising one another towards truth and patience. It implies that sincere advice leads to righteousness and helps individuals navigate the challenges of life. By advising each other sincerely, Muslims can strengthen their bond of brotherhood and sisterhood, fostering love and affection among themselves.
Furthermore, the Quran teaches us that sincere advice is a means of guiding others towards the right path. In Surah An-Nahl, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says, (Quran 16:125)
Invite to the way of your Lord with wisdom and good instruction, and argue with them in a way that is best.
This verse emphasizes the importance of giving advice with wisdom and good instruction. By doing so, Muslims can effectively convey the message of Islam and guide others towards the path of righteousness. Sincere advice, rooted in wisdom and good manners, can have a profound impact on the hearts and minds of people, fostering affection and understanding.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his immense knowledge and wisdom, understood the power of sincere advice. He would often provide counsel to his companions and followers, guiding them towards righteousness and helping them overcome their challenges. His advice was not only based on his deep understanding of the Quran but also on his profound knowledge of human nature.
When we reflect on the Hadith,
Sincere advice reaps affection,
we realize that sincere advice is not just about giving guidance but also about showing genuine care and concern for others. When we sincerely advise someone, we demonstrate our love and affection for them, as we want what is best for them in this world and the hereafter. This genuine concern fosters a sense of affection and strengthens the bond between individuals.
Moreover, sincere advice has far-reaching consequences. It not only benefits the one who receives it but also the one who gives it. By advising others sincerely, we purify our intentions and fulfill our duty as Muslims to enjoin good and forbid evil. This act of selflessness and concern for others brings us closer to Allah and strengthens our relationship with Him.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ),
Sincere advice reaps affection,
highlights the importance of advising one another sincerely. By giving advice rooted in wisdom and good manners, Muslims can guide others towards the right path and foster love and affection among themselves. Sincere advice is a means of benefiting others and purifying our own souls. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to give and receive sincere advice, and may it strengthen our bonds of affection as a united Muslim ummah.
